I started having trouble with my engine stalling when shifting into gear. Now the only way to start the engine is to remove the killswitch clip and pull and release the killswitch button while cranking the engine. One person told me it was the stator but I can't stop thinking that the problem is the ignition switch. I would think that if it was the stator then I wouldn't be able to start the motor at all, let alone have it run good. If I pull the killswitch back out it will keep running.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds to me like you have a wire shorting out in the kill switch. The wires are inside the control box are moving when you are trying to shift into gear.
Pull the controls apart and check the connections on the kill switch, and the wires for worn insulation.

Re: 92' force 50 hp weak spark

I have disconnected the 2 wires going into the killswitch and tried starting with them disconnected and also tried jumping them together, thinking i would be able to eliminate the killswitch. I agree I have a short but am not sure how to find it. Also it is very hard to get at the killswitch because I haven't figured out how to remove the shift from the brass linkage gears in the control box. I have a US marine control box.It really seems like the killswitch but I thought jumping the connections would tell me more. Thanks for responding and any more help would be greatly appreciated.

In the center of the shift handle, at the pivot point, there is a small round cap in the center.
Remove the cap, behind it is a screw, remove it, then slide the shift handle off the gear.
Then remove the small screws that hold the cover on.
Now you can get to the kill switch and ignition switch wiring.

I have checked the wiring and could not find any worn insulation. The spades coming off of the killswitch are both loose and wiggle when I push on them. I am thinking there is something wrong in the killswitch and I should start there and change it out. What do you think?

Sounds like the kill switch has gotten woogly on you (woogly is a technical term :D ). I would see if I could find a new one and replace it.

Re: 92' force 50 hp weak spark

I really appreciate all of the advice and info. Now I had decided to buy a new kill switch and I thought I would just do a little more checking. I can jump from the blue wire to the white wire on the ignition switch and then it will start by turning the key. But why can't I just connect the white and blue wire from the killswitch and start it? Every time I am sure it is the killswitch I try something else and it looks like the ignition switch!! The kill switch shows no resistance across the connection spades, as if it was ok. This is a strange motor!!!

Could very well be the ignition switch, wouldn't be the first time.

Re: 92' force 50 hp weak spark

hi,i had same probs with my 1989 force 50hp,it would start if i manually operated carb but this was intermittant and once running it was fine,in the end it got worse and it was the head gasket which was on the way out as one day it would not start and when it did it misfired all the time so took plugs out and bottom plug had water in it.i have fixed it now(within a week) but i was very surprised to see how quickly rust starts to set in in the bore,im glad i caught mine before the bore got ruined.
