I have an 89 force 125. I just had the seals replaced in the lower unit at a boat dealer this winter. I had them check everything on the motor and all alse seemed to be fine.

Last time on the lake when I shift into forward I get a ratcheting sound but no forward. If I give it more gas it will pop into forward but is way to much pressure on the gears. Reverse and neutral work just fine.

I just read a thread talking about the pin in the lower unit that can be adjusted but part of the text was edited and not visible. How exactly do you adjust the pin to go lower? Should this be adjusted at the motor or on the lower unit?

Any quick reply will be appreciated. My brother is coming in from Texas this weekend and I would like to take him out on some Iowa lakes. All boat shops in this part of the country have a minimum wait of two weeks before they will even look at it and it must be on their property (no appointments).

Thanks

Re: shift linkage

Adjust the shift linkage at the motor a wee bit.

The shifter has a cylinder and ball arrangement. Slide the cylinder towards the cable and you should be able to get it undone. If there is a nut there simply screw it towards the cable then slide it forward.

I am not sure where forward is on your motor (or mine but I would just move the shiftewr and check.) you may need to screw it in a few turns or loosen a few turns to adust it up. Slide the sheath back and slip it over the ball. then tighten the nut down.

Hope this helps.

BTW WELCOME TO iBoats!!!!

Re: shift linkage

Adjusted the cable in as far as I dare. It got really tight. It seemed to ehlp a little but did not get it all the way in gear and still getting the ratcheting some. Any other place to adjust that you know of.

Someone said the dog ears on the lower unit may be worn to the point it won't help to adjust. I would have thought when it was down for seal replacement the repair shop would have seen that.

Re: shift linkage

At the control box you have a small bit of adjustment there.
If there was a way to unhook the front cable and pulll it or push it to go into forward. Hold it with vicegrips maybe? That will tell you if you really have stripped gears.

Will be hard to do but you will really know! Maybe take it to a test tank so they can test it without being on the lake!
