I have a 1990 Force 150. I find it odd that when I pull the lower unit towards me it moves about an inch as well as the upper unit (the motor) moves. I notced there are large rubber pieces mounted at the top and bottom which appear to be there to absorb shock. Is this movement normal or do I have a serious problem. If so what is it? This is one of two engines and they both do it. Please help. GaryD

Not normal on any outboard I have seen.
Should be no movement.
I would start by checking to seel if the bolts that anchor the powerhead are tight.
There is an adaptor plate and some gaskets on the bottom of the powerhead, maybe they are loose.

Does the midsection of the motor move also, or just the lower unit and the powerhead?

I guess I would remove the lower unit.
Then remove the powerhead and see what you can find.

There is a real good Force mechanic out there that may have more insight. You can reach him at themarinedoctor.com.

No, it is just the lower unit and the powerhead. They move together. It almost looks as if it was designed that way to absorb the shock of forward and reverse shifting. Do you have a 150 HP Force?

I had an 89 Force 150 that gave up the ghost in June forcing me to repower win a 150 Optimax. Anyway, I have never seen that movement you are speaking of and I have removed the lower unit of the motor. I would definitely agree with the previous post to go back do some checking on connections as well as mounts. Mine never moved like that.

No, I've never owned a 150, but several Force motors, 35, 40, and 70hp.

Any movement will produce wear.

Thans for the replies. I have looked through a repair manual but can't find the mounts. Where are they located and where would I buy new ones. I am confused at the moment.
