Well, its running!
Set the timing, compresion on #1 is coming up!!

Seems to need to idle high to stay running,
When I go into gear in the water it dies.

It will start on a dime, run high and low end, seeme to be a bit choppy on the idle but cant understand the gear problem.

What do you mean Compression on #1 is coming up? Bad cylinder will have the problems you are experiencing. Link and sync on carbs could be wrong or a dirty carb or damaged fuel pump could do this. Post your compression numbers first then maybe start working on the fuel system.

Re: 87 125 kills when going into gear

After the rebuild before running I got #1 50 #2 125 #3 110 (the original bad piston) #4 125.

After ideling in a tub for about and hour all are the same except #1 is up to 80,
I have rebuilt alot of old small block chevys in my youth and found pistons tend to take some time to seat.

Fuel pump is strong, carbs are set higher to keep running at a higher idel due to wanting to kill at the standard setting.

Whats the best way to sync the carbs?

When motor is idling have you tried to choke it just before you put it into gear? After rebuild are you running 24 to 1 oil to gas mix? It is recommended to run higher oil rate for at least six gallons of gas. If motor improves when choking something is probably giving you grief in your fuel system. If choke shows no improvement check the plugs and see if the number 1 cylinder looks like it is firing and igniting gas. If that plug is clean swap it with another cylinder and see if the clean one gets dirty and the number one plug gets clean.

I am runing 50 to 1, wouldnt 24 to 1 load up the plugs? I will try the choke idea, all plugs are a bit dirty, I would think ideling a 2 stroke in a water tub would cause this. I was told that 2 strokes tend to load up at idle.

Funny thing is that evry now and then it runs like a million bucks, (briefly)then wont start, then run rough, then will run, ect.

When a coil goes bad is it possible to be in and out or does it just go dead?
