Second time on this one. Took the boards advice and rebuilt the fuel pump. No luck. Boat will still not get faster than seemingly about 1/4 speed when WOT and will not get on plane with just me in it. Compression is top to bottom 120/118/115. Ran a can of seafoam thru it as well, when I was trying to load up the engine with the seafoam I could tell a change on the top and mid carbs but there was no change in running when I sprayed in the bottom carb? Problem with the bottom cylinder????? I checked the fuel lines on the engine itself and they seem to be ok, as in the previous post I have already changed the main fuel line. Also, the plugs were not really dirty as they should have been after the seafoam (first time I did the decarb this year) The model number of the motor is 856X6L...Is there anything else I can try before I send it to a shop. I have another set of carbs that were rebuilt last year (got them from a friend and dont know how dirty the inside might be) and another set of coils.

Have you tested the spark yet? Ground the plug tips with the wires attached and see if you are getting spark to all three cylinders. Also what color is your stator? Certian force motors with black stators were known defective and replaced with red stators. Does motor start good and run fine at lower rpms? If spark tests okay and it runs good at lower rpm chnces are your stator is crapping out or you have another electrical problem.

Checked the stator- its pretty dirty up there but it appears to be a black one. How difficult is this to change and are any special tools needed? I have a SELOC manual so maybe it will not be too difficult. Will test the spark tomorrow when I can get some help, cant reach the key and watch the plug, lol. The motor starts good and idles just fine although it seems to be a little slower than it should at low rpm. I dont have a working tach right now but one is on the way.

Leave the motor off and advance the throttle all the way in gear. Then look into the carb throats. The throttle plates should be flat. You may have to remove the air box in front to see.

Did that at first just to be sure WOT was in fact WOT. They all look fully open and all evenly open to me.

Checked the spark. Top and mid will jump about 1/4 in no spark at all on the bottom....Changed the coil twice, no luck....Took some electric cleaner and cleaned the area around the stator, all the wires appear to be in good shape. Any ideas on where to look or what to check next????

Update - checked the wiring between the stator and CD units. There are two black connectors with yellow and blue wires going in and coming out of them. On one of these the blue wire has been cut and spliced into the other one and now both go into one of them. The SELOC manual wiring diagram shows both connectors to have the yellow and blue wire.......Dont know why the previous owner(or mechanic) would have done this, the engine ran fine last year like this, any ideas????

This weekend I was having trouble with my 1986, 85HP force and I noticed the exact same situation with the blue and yellow wires. My guess is that since their are 2 CDI boxes to fire 3 coils, one of the blue wires is terminated in that connection. (only a guess, my first boat and I've only had it 2 weeks!)

Just a note seems we are having the same problem but mine is not firing on top cylinder. Have a question for you, have you touched the front of your engine when it is running? We have noticed that you get zapped when you touch engine. I posted about this problem not getting much feedback will keep spying on yours you seem to get some helpfull hints. If you find out what is wrong email me at cashhamburgy@cox.net<br />Thank You

If you are getting zapped look to see if the plate that the cdi is on has a ground wire going to the block. This plate has to be grounded

Will do j wolf, was at the lake Sat and had the cover off while decarbing it, cant remember if I touched the engine or not, sure I did and sure I would remember a surprise shock, if I can zero in on the problem I will be sure and let you know. Next chance I get I am going to swap the CDI units around and see if my spark problem moves to another cylinder.....if not then I will keep fishin, just not for fish, lol.........

Yes they did go up quite a bit. Hopefully this will correct my problem. Thinking about just bolting the entire assembly in place rather than swapping out the one part. Anyways, will keep post updated when I get the stuff. Oh yeah, this is my work name, cant use AOL here......

Hope that fixes your problem. I got my new CDI yesterday and ran down to friends house to put it on and I now have spark in all three cylinders! Thanks to all who have helped out. Hope to get back down Friday and start it!

Thanks to all, looks like my (current, LOL) problem is solved. Put new assembly (cd units and coils) on, went to the lake and it started great and ran just fine. Not getting but about 30 mph out of it but it gets there quick, will have to look further into that, thanks to all who helped.
