Ok, so there is a hole in the port side of the boat(friends), towards the bow. Slightly above the waterline I believe. Haven't seen this before on a boat, and wondering what it is. About 3/4" diameter, with a screen over it. Not some random hole, apparently meant to be there. Just have no idea what it does!

Got a pic? What kind of boat? Can you see it from the inside of the hull anywhere?

'85 Century Mustang. It's a runabout, so no kitchen/cabin kind of stuff. Not readily visible from the inside, though I haven't taken all the stuff out of the bow seat to check.

It's probably just a drain for one of the forward compartments,ie:ski locker, anchor well, fish box etc...
I have about 6 on my boat in various places.(all above the waterline ;) )
Don't have any screens on them though. Would think that would tend to get clogged up eventually.

The screen stops critters from nesting in there, dave. :)

Is there livewells or baitwells on board? No matter...look in the compartments, see which ones have drains, poor some water in, see where it goes.

What is the difference between a live well and bait well?

You keep bait in a bait well and lives in a live well!

Just kidding, as far as I have ever heard, they are one in the same.

On my boat that would be the drain for the ice chest under the glove box.

Could be a vent if there is a forward battery compartment.

you keep bait in a bait well, and your catch in a live well, to keep them fresh. bait wells are usually smaller than live wells.

That makes sense tashasdaddy, and it would help to explain why everytime I put my catch in the baitwell, there is no bait left later! ;)

Re: Hole in port side of boat!

back when is was a kid, they built boats where the center seat had a live & bait well. once a mocasin came thru the hole in the live well and had eaten part of the fish.

Is the fuel tank fill up frount? My uncle had an MFG with a frount fuel fill. The hole with screen could be the fuel vent.Depending on how far above the waterline it actually is.

Was the moccasin still in there when you opened up the well? That would REALLY be quite a surprise!!!

bait in baitwell, lives in livewell. everyone had it right.

usually only find livewells on freshwater bass boats. larger, offshore boats only have baitwells, and then they have ice boxes for the fish you're taking home.

i have 1 baitwell and 3 insulated fishboxes on my grady.
