The last time I took the boat out I noticed that as soon as I turned it on and tried to move forward, the engine immediately began to accelerate. Just a few weeks before, I took it out and it was fine. What happens is that as I increase past the neutral position forward, the engine accelerates immediately; when before it would gently kick into gear and shortly after that start accelerating. Please help.

Hello Jake and welcome to iboats. There should be a round cam connected to the carburator throttle plates. When the throttle is engaged it rubs against this cam opening the throttle plates. When throttle is at it lowest position(slow idle) there should be a gap between the linkage and this cam. The thickness of a piece of regular paper. In the middle of the cam is a screw that is an excentric. loosening the screw and turning it should make a slight change in the orientation of the cam. My chrysler does the same thing as you mention however the acceleration is minor.

Sounds great. I will give that a look see ASAP. I did notice that this problem doesn't happen when I go in reverse. Does that still sound like it could be the issue?

I am not sure what is causing it. Have someone else duplicate the shifting while you watch the shift and throttle cables connected to the tower on your motor. Pay close attention to the throttle cable and see if it moves at all when doing the shifting. Could be you have a loose connection in the thottle connections and it is moving while shifting.
