good morning,i have a '80 chrysler 6hp model 65hoa ser# 1158 that wants to cut in and out when i put the hood on. it runs great with the hood off on the lake,(i'm pushing a 12ft row boat),when i put the hood on, it runs good for less than a minute then starts to cut out(almost like its dropping a cylinder), open the hood and it runs great again. i've replaced the fuel diaphram, plugs, and run seafoam fuel system cleaner thru it. i set the timing and low speed idle as best as possible in the barrel, it does not seem to cut out in the barrel with the hood on, but i'm not running it as hard either.whats causing this, and what can i do to fix it?

Re: sufficating 6hp

Hello fablemaster and welcome to Iboats. Sounds like you are getting an exhaust leak. See attached link Powerhead Diagram. It could be part number 26 (2 each). I would also remove and clean the screens is part number 9.

My guess is your exhaust leak is coming from this diagram Motor Leg Diagram part number 3. This part usually turns to jelly over the years and will cause the problem you are experiencing. Search the internet and see if you can find a complete gasket kit for your motor. The shad connection had them but their link dosent work anymore. A complete set runs about 35 dollars and will have every gasket except for the head gasket.

eurolarva, thanks for the quick reply, i take it this leak is internal, and i'm not gonna be able to find it externally.the motor runs fairly quiet, and i don't /can't hear a leak.i'm starting my search for the gasket kit, i'll let you know if and where i find them.

Re: sufficating 6hp

Exhaust usually is channeled down into the leg and into the water. If the gasket is worn you wont hear anything. Maybe in an area with no wind or breeze you will see it while at idle if it is a bad enough leak. Chances are though when the cover is off the flywheel will act like a fan and blow the smoke away.

eurolarva, i've been shot down in my search for the gaskets. i'm gonna make them myself, is there a required thickness i need to maintain? or will standard gasket material do?

Re: sufficating 6hp

Go to NAPA and tell them you want gasket material that wont blow through. It will be between 1/16 inch thick to 1/8 inch. The gaskets below the power head are thicker then the ones on the port side. Make sure you use removable permatex on the gaskets. NAPA has a good one I believe they call avaionic. I will try and do a search tonight for gaskets. you can try the Marine Doctor. He may be able to get these gaskets for you.

eurolarva, doug russell doesn't have them, they are "no longer avalible", but they are checking their suppliers for me. no word back from the marine doctor yet. How is your mercury expertise? my neighbor has a 20hp jetdrive mid 90's(i will get the year& ser#) that will not start. its getting gas,and spark to both cylinders. the last time out, it was running on one cylinder, the second would kick in and out . he shut it off when we got to the fishing hole, and it has not started since. it cranks and occasionally pops, but will not start. both cylinders have spark, but it seems weak to me.i did not put a meter to them. suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Sorry Fablemaster. I am not a merc guy. Your best bet is to post it in the mercury forum. Tons of guys there that know those motors. I would do a compression test first on it. If compression is good try squirting some gas mix into the carb and see if it will at least cough Good luck.
