Re: Is my motor shot? UPDATE!!!!! TEST RUN

I wouls do the temp warning buzzer, and a water pressure gauge. The pressure gauge will let you know about an impeller failure BEFORE the engine overheats, if you look at it once in a while.

It simply screws into the little pipe plug on the top of the engine, just above the thermostat housing. Run the plastic tube to the dash , install the gauge and attach the tube.

They sell the water pressure gauge kits in the iboats mall.

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...ure+gauge&submit.x=0&submit.y=0&submit=Search

Re: Is my motor shot? UPDATE!!!!! TEST RUN

Well I took the boat for a test run. The engine turns over and goes into front and reverse gears great. Alot more water is spitting out of the engine then before and the head stays cool enough for me to put my hands on it for a good 10 seconds. No stalling. In neutral and a low cruising speed the engine seems to accelerate as it should. When I get to wide open throttle though the front end of the boat stays in the air and does not plain out. It will run like this for about 1 min and then plain out and accelerate quickly to get to full throttle. Then if go down to cruising speed and try to go to full wot again it is the same scenario. What should I do to fix this probelem?

Just to let you know, in our previous converstions I discussed a tell tales to insure that the water pump was moving water. I read one of roscoes posts and he explained that a water pressure guage would let you know well in advance if you have a water movement problem. Well it made a whole lot of sence to me and I ended up purchasing and installing one in lue of a tell tale. Just a thought, I personally would rather know well ahead if there is a cooling issue.....Just a thought

Force 50, Sounds like the motor is probably running ok, and the problem is in boat/motor setup.

What model-size-year is the boat?

Does your motor have a tach?
If so, what are the maximum rpm achieved when it planes out and you are at full throttle?

Does the motor have power tilt and trim?
If not, what hole is the motor tilt pin placed in on the transom bracket?
If yes, are you using it?

When you start out, the motor should be lowered completely down. Then after the boat gets up on plane, you can raise the tilt until you hear the motor sound a bit relaxed and the rpm's go up slightly.

Also, where is the anti ventilation plate on the lower unit, in relation to the bottom of the hull?

And does the lower unit have one of those whale tails mounted on it?

I know, lots of questions, but we have to narrow it down and see if it is a trim problem, a prop problem, a motor height problem, or if the boat is just too big and heavy.

Re: Is my motor shot? UPDATE!!!!! TEST RUN

THANKS FOR THE REPLIES. THE BOAT A IS 88 MODEL 15 FOOT BAYLINER CAPRI BOWRIDER. IT HAS A 10-12 PITCH PROP ON IT.I DO PLAN ON PUTTING A TELL TALE ON IT AND WATER PRESSURE GAUGE. THE BOAT HAS THE ORIGINAL 50HP FORCE MOTOR. THE BOAT DOES NOT HAVE A TACH OR POWER TILT AND TRIM. THE MOTOR TILT PIN IS PLACED IN THE VERY LAST HOLE FARTHEST FROM THE BACK OF THE BOAT. THERE IS NO WHALE TAIL MOUNTED ON IT. THE FLAT PLATE ABOVE THE PROPELLER IS EVEN WITH THE BOTTOM OF THE HULL. I PULLED THE CARB OFF IT TODAY AND PUT A NEW GASKET ON IT WHERE IT MOUNTS TO THE MOTOR ALONG WITH A NEW FLOAT BOWL GASKET. THE CARB LOOKS VERY CLEAN AND THE INSIDE OF INTAKE WHERE THE CARB MOUNTS LOOKS CLEAN ALSO. ONCE THE BOAT FINALLY PLANES OUT IT WILL RUN FAST AND SMOOTH AS LONG AS I WANT IT TO UNTIL I THROTTLE DOWN AGAIN. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR PROPELLER IS GOING BAD. IT SPINS FREELY WITH MY HAND IN NUETRAL AND MOVES A LITTLE BIT FROM SIDE TO SIDE WHEN IN GEAR WITH MY HAND. I PULLED THE PORP OFF TO SEE IF THE HUB WAS BAD BUT IT FEELS VERY TIGHT AND SNUG INSIDE THE CENTER OF THE PROP.

A spun prop will be hard to detect by hand. The free play in the prop in both forward and reverse are normal so dont worry about it. To test for a spun prop you take a magic marker or finger nail polish and draw a straight line on the prop and the prop nut. If prop slips these lines will no longer line up. 50 HP force seems notorious for spinning hubs.

Gonna have to try different tilt pin settings.
Moving the motor down/in toward the transom will help to plane the boat. But move it too far and you will decrease the top end speed.

Also, that motor is a bit on the small side for that boat.
It will help to eliminate any extra weight and to move as much weight forward in the boat.

Don't carry 2 full gas tanks if you don't need to.
Don't carry extra gear like anchors, coolers, batteries, etc.
Have your passengers sit up fron till you get on plane.

You could try a 10 pitch or 11 pitch prop, but without a tach, you won't know if you are over revving the motor. Well, I guess you don't know that with the 12 pitch prop you have now.

Let us know how different tilt pin positions work for you.
