I have a 1976 chrysler 1059hd,it has been converted to use a distributor cap. When trying to start it , it will spit and sputter but not start. I have replaced the plugs and have distributor cap on order but not sure if that might be the problem. I have to choke the crap out of it to get it to sputter, the carbs have been rebuilt last year. Help

Re: trouble starting

Try starting with a spark test. If spark test is good try spraying gas oil mix or fogging oil into carb and see if it will fire that way. To spark test stick a big screw it the plug wire and try to jump a spark about 1/4 inch to the metal on the motor.

It has good spark, sprayed the carbs and same result. I have to choke the crap out of it to get it to sputter.

gas + compression + spark = explosion

so you got spark.
I assume you checked compression.
all that's left is making sure that there is gas and that the spark happens at the right time.

when you pump the bulb does it go a few pumps and then stiffen? That would mean that your carb needles aren't stuck closed. Any gas leaking out of carb overflows when you pump? If not that means needles aren't stuck open. Only other thing needed for gas is clear jets and some airflow to suck up some vapors. Let's assume that you haven't changed idle mixture since it last ran. Is your butterfly completely closed? if it is then you might be trying to start your engine on a starvation diet. check that idle spped adjustment screw and make sure the butterfly is just a little bit open. Really desperate? Convinced it the carbs? maybe the gas evaporated and left enough 2stroke residue to gum up the jets. unlikely but possible.

more likely is timing. I suspect that static timing the distributor and making sure butterfly is open (just a tad) will fix it.

Re: trouble starting

You may have the spark plug wires connected wrong. The firing order on that motor is 1-3-2-4

It was the timing, the screw to adjust it was striped. Got a new one and runs fine, except the are a little out of sync. How many turns to set each carb.

Re: trouble starting

1 1/4 turn out for the mixture screws as a base start. Then make adjustments to fine tune them. You want to be about half way between when the motor starts racing and when it starts to sputter. Final test is to goose the throttle. It should just get up and go if it hesitates then goes it is too rich. If it dies it is too lean.

Thanks, I will give it a try in a couple of days when I hit the water.
