Re: 91 L-DRIVE IMPELLER
the impeller is mounted directly on drive shaft. it is sandwiched between the bottom and top half of the motor. there are seven or eight bolts that hold gearcase onto engine. After you take them out, the gearcase just falls off ... or wiggles off.

It is an extremely easy job that should take 2-4 hours for a first timer. add 1-2 hours for every seized bolt. routinely maintained engine = no seized bolts. not so routinely maintained engine means the great unknown.

if you do have a frozen bolt, do not try to force it out by overpowering it. nothing will make a simple job difficult as quickly as a snapped off stainless steel bolt. use a combination of propane heat, pb-blaster, impact driver, and patience. a little bit out, a little bit in, a little bit further out, and a little bit further in. tiny little baby steps.

if frozen bolts are a real issue, then check anode. if salt water engine then clean guide holes of residue and coat bolts with silicone gasket sealer during asembly. if salt water engine, it also never hurts to run a high quality tap down the threads and make sure that they are clean.
