I dont know the year of the motor, but it is a 125hp force. Iam thinking of buying. The owner says The motor is a 125 HP Force outboard 2-cycle. It does run, but will not go into forward gear under load. Reverse works fine.
What all is involed with fixing? From easyest to worst. Plus if you know the cost for parts that would be big help.
Thanks

Re: force 125hp

I wonder if it's nothing more than a spun prop hub. That would just mean rehubbing or a different prop. They can slip under thrust if the hub is spun. Since it can't get full throttle in reverse, it may not be under enough stress to slip badly in reverse. In other words, you might not notice the hub is sliping in Reverse, but definately notice it slipping in Forward. That would be a best-case scenario.

Re: force 125hp

Not really.
Best test is to draw a line on the prop with a permanent marker.
Draw line from outer housing, across the rubber hub to the inner hub. Take for a test drive. Then look at the line. It it is still a continuous straight line, it is fine. If the hub is spun, the lines will not line up.

Does the motor go into forward gear at all?
Can you idle around at low rpm?
Will the engine rev up when in forward?

If its a 125 Force, it is between 1984 and 1989 model year.

Would it possibly need a lower unit?? What would be the high & low end of getting this fixed???

So he wants you to buy the boat without even getting to test drive it?

No deal.

A test drive is a deal breaker.
It might be just a new prop, or it could be so much more.

Has he ran the engine for you at all?
In a water tank or on muffs?
Checked the compression?
Checked for spark?
Checked lower unit for water intrusion and function?
Checked the transom for rot inside the fiberglass?
Checked the stringers under the floor for rot?

$600 maximum for the boat motor and trailer without an in water test drive .!!! Then plan on buying a replacement motor for $3000+ .

Without a test drive, you are blind to the condition of that motor.

I would probably walk away from that deal no matter what the price, and look for a different boat, and test drive it.

If the problem was in the lower unit, you would have symptoms in both directions. Test drive the boat before you put the money on the table. If you have any reservations, walk away. Lot of good boats out there for the money!

clymer manual...what did you end up buying the boat for, model and year of boat?? do what roscoe said to do.. draw a line on prop and try test it out.

Re: force 125hp

this is the boat Item number: 4645408670 on ebay.
The guy only lives 15min. from my house. I paid $1,200.00. I heard it run sounded OK. The flywheel
has a piece about 2" broken off on the top (not the teeth) will this effect balance?? If the motor wont go forward can I still use what roscoe said?? When he had it running on the muffs it went in both forward and reverse.

Re: force 125hp

yea you have to check and see if prop is spinning.......after you get this figured out do a compression check and spark check.

Re: force 125hp

So the motor shifts into forward, but it just won't move?

Time for a new prop.
Easier and cheaper to try that, than to tear the lower unit down to inspect.

Flywheel would be a concern for me.

Re: force 125hp

sounded to me like he was trying to say that it won't shift into forward. I must have missed the part where it shifts into gear but doesn't go anywhere. my first inclination was to check the shift linkage since it's the easiest and cheapest thing that could be "broken".

but otherwise - what roscoe said about checking compression/spark/etc.

i'd be wary of the flywheel. it's suppossed to have three notches in it and maybe that's the 2" chunk? if you are seriously looking at a flywheel with a 2" chunk taken out of it, then I think you should replace it before going out. Those things can burst and send shrapnel.

if you need a lower unit, a flywheel, or other parts like that then ebay is a good place to look.

This is what leads me to believe spun prop.

Re: force 125hp

With a spun prop, it will be lose or fall off the hub when you remove the prop from the shaft. The best manual would be the original Force service manual. It has trouble shooting procedures, tools required and specs for the motor that you will need to tackle any repair. Cylmer and Seloc cover many motors and tend to be to general on some repair procedures.

Re: force 125hp

Well I was checking it out today. It will go into forward, buy when you are trying to engage it bumbs back on the shifter like on a car that the manual trans isnt synchronized. I tried adjusting the linkage according to the cylmer manual. Kind of hard to figure out though.
Any suggestions.
THANKS

Re: force 125hp

disconnect the little cotter pin thingy between gearcase and motor leg. spin prop by hand and raise shift rod until it just engages. do same with lowering shift rod. mark the halfway point with a sharpie.

go up top and set the throttle to neutral. go to engine and adjust cables so that neutral safety switch is exactly center. With neutral safety switch in exact center go back down to cotter pin. the bottom end of rod is threaded. spin the rod one or two turns to line up your sharpie so that cotter pin fits back perfectly.

that's it. if it's still out of whack then something else might be wrong.
