My friends 94 force 70 hp spins in the wrong direction when started. He says the starter turns it in the right direction, then it reverses when it starts. The boat shop is stumped, what is wrong? He says this started after haaving a new tilt motor installed. Please help, thanks.

Re: 94 force 70 hp runs backward

Welcome to iboats. :)

He needs a flywheel. There is a magnetic strip glued around the center to trigger the ignition. The bondng may have let go and the strip has moved out of position, throwing the timing off. It would show-up with a timing light. Another possibility is that the magnetic strip fractured, setting-up an unexpected North/South junction for the ignition system to detect and fire. That would show-up as extra flashing on the timing light, and would be more likely to make the motor run rough than backwards.

It could also be nothing more than a sheared flywheel key. Hope for that.

Update: A new flywheel did not correct the problem. The motor still runs backward. What else can cause this? Thanks.

Re: 94 force 70 hp runs backward

There is a shift in the ignition timing. If it fires too early it reverses the crank direction and runs backward with a retarded timing.

The most common cause is a sheared flywheel key or a slipped trigger. Replacing the flywheel should have corrected either.

The next most likely suspect is a shifted stator, caused by really bad link 'n' synch relationship between the throttle and the stator.

Take a look at the synch of the stator and its linkage.
