I have a problem with my dads 1989 force 125..
Last summer while i was comming back in to the marina the over heat alarm came on.
I coasted back in to our slip and left it for a few hours and went back and started it and everything was fine.

Well the problem is back now.
We brought it home to fish the st clair river and i decided it would be good to let it run on the hose for a while today.
It ran fine for about 10 minutes and then the alarm came on.

I shut it down and waited about 5 minutes and it the alarm was still on when i turned the key on.

Dad told me to start it up and see if any water came out of the pisser.

Nothing was coming out at all. there was water coming out from the prop though.

Is my water pump shot? or is it the thurmostat?

I have the Service manual and am sure i can handle this myself.
I dont believe the water pump has been change in about 5 to 7 years since the lover unit was replaced due to it meeting a piling on lake huron.

If it is the water pump could the motor of sucked up peices of the impeller? How would one go about making sure the peices are out of the cooling system?
Could i take compressed air and try and blow it back to the water pump?

Thanks for the help

You are due for a new water pump anyway. I change mine every two seasons. Also do a compression check to make sure you have not blown a head gasket. A blown head gasket will cause an over heat alarm as well.

How would I know if it has a blown head gasket? I dont really want to tear in to the motor unless I have to.

Change the impeller first, then try it. If still heats up, start another post, and we can work at it again

Change the impeller.
Examine the water pump housing for pitting or scoring, replace if needed.

Buy or borrow a compression tester ($30).
Test compression to determine if head gasket is bad.
