I have a friend that has a 1983 Honda BF100 Outboard that has only been used twice in its lifetime. I pulled it out of storage after 7 years of laying on the floor this weekend and it started on the 2nd pull. The last time the motor was ran the impeller was replaced. It is like brand new except the water comes out of the check tube but not with the pressure as my Honda 5hp. I remember that the motor was doing the same thing before the impeller was replaced. Is this normal???

Re: Honda BF100 Water Pump Question

7 years is a long time for an impeller, let alone a dry one. Impellers tend to dry out and crack, and wont make the seal like it should. Most people change them yearly, or bi-yearly.

I'd also clean the carbs, flush the lower unit, change out old gas, check fuel filter, give the engine a good flush with the muffs, and other basic tune up stuff, and you should be good to go!

if the impeler was replaced and the pump body was also bad this would be a comon problem often the body needs to be replaced alongt with the impeler

You won't see this engine pumping out water with the enthusiastic stream of your 5 whether the pump is new or old. That's the way it is.If that engine has been sitting idle for some time you should certainly change the impeller just as a matter of course. They detieriorate with time as well as use.
