2002 Honda 90 - This moter is still new, two summer seasons in clean/fresh water only. It has performed flawlessly and only has 105 hours of use. However, I have two problems/concerns (note, both since the moter was new...) and I wonder if I should haul the boat back make issues of these with the dealer:

1) Smoke Upon Startup - If after shutting the motor off, I leave the moter fully trimmed down for any period of time more than a few minutes, it smokes (sometimes lots) upon re-starting the motor. After starting the moter, the smoke only persists for about 15 seconds then it clears up. I described this to the dealer and he said he had never heard of a Honda smoking? Note, when fully trimmed down the moter does angle back past 90 degrees away from the boat towards the water a bit but this trim angle doesn't look at all unsual. I suspect crankcase oil must be leaking into the cylindars and burning off when I start the moter? Is this normal? Is it cause for concern? Valve problem?

2) Noise - Particularly when quickly decelerating, there is a strange whining noise. It is less noticable at any stead speed. I have had several mechanically savy folks, listen and it is definitely in the motor (or lower unit) and is not related to a water/hull sort of noise.

Any thoughts or suggestions we be great.

Thanks!

Have a 2004 BF75 which smokes upon starting the engine. Dealer said that I needed to trim the motor up a little after coming to a stop and killing the engine. They said that there is oil that will leak into the cylinders if you don't trim it up. Did that and all is fine. Can't help on the noise.

Check your prop for proper installation of the thurst hubs and torque on the nut.

You may find, that in the future, that reffering to your 2, or maybe nearly 3 year old motor with 105 hours of use as "still new" is inacurate.

It could provoke some animosity.

Hondas will smoke if the crankcase is even a thimble-full overfilled with oil.

Think of the top line of the dipstick as being maximum and the lower line minimum. If the oil level is halfway in between, it's perfect.

I will get a whining/buzz type of noise during a quick decel. I've isolated it as being the paddle wheel on my speedo pickup.

Rattler:
I've been meaning to find the time for an elaborate reply to your post for a few days now. Sorry - too busy. But quickly, my '99 90hp also exhibited the same problems as yours - including the noise. The oil burning during starting got to the point that I would wait for the 'coast to be clear' before starting. I would suggest you do a search for previous posts of mine on this board and you'll find a list of problems, what they were and what Honda did about it. There should even be a phone number in there somewhere to a Honda rep that treated me like royalty.
AS for the noise, I found it went away as I trimmed the motor out. It seemed to merely be a resonance sound. ALthough the paddle wheel idea seems plausible too.
Good Luck

Re: 2002 Honda BF90 Concerns

just a couple of thoughts. theese people are correct when they say that your engine should be stored in a positive trim angle to avoid oil leaking past the rings into the combustion chamber. i see theese honda 90's averaging 5000 hrs (yes, five thousand hours) of commercial use. at 105 hours your not even going to see full fuel economy. your engine will start to break loose around 250 to 300 hrs. as for the rattle, checking the prop is a good idea. you may have harmonics traveling through your hull, aluminum hulls are the worst. as the gentalman said, honda will treat you like royalty. i no longer work for a honda dealership, but not only listens, they stand behind their products.

just about to purchased a used BF90, it smoked terribly when started by the seller when I viewed it, what does this mean? He said it was because "he had left it sitting for a while". Also he claims it is a 99' and only had 100 hrs on it, any way to verify this year and hours? It is a model BBBL-BF90A, s/n-2002009.
Thanks very much.

Although dealers and reps claim they have never seen this problem, it seems to be out there. Mine did it for several months and then inexplicably stopped - hasnt done it for years since.
I dont think this is a problem that sould hold concern for you. What might be however are the service bulletins for this motor - there were several, including bad gaskets on the gearbox, some type of vaccuum device for acceleration, mesh guard on the intake manifold and impellor. Ask if the seller has addressed any. Chances are he was unaware as was I. Cost to fix these runs $500 - $600 CDN and two of them, IMO, should have been recalls.
