When I went out to the shed to look over my 2001 Tohatsu 15D2 before taking it out for the season, I noticed a very small puddle of oil just under the foot and just behind the prop. Checking it for a day reveals it leaks about a drop about every hour ... maybe a bit longer.

The engine didn't see much use last season, so it's been 8 or 9 months sine it was last run.

An aquaintence tells me to not worry about it .. to run it and it'll probably re-swell the seal and cure itself. ... Maybe.

I might try it, but am leery ... I've seen'em get worse, but never better.
2 things ... 1. anyone ever hear of a slight prop seal leak curing itself? ... and,
2, how much of a problem is it to change that seal?

Thanks

No, they don re-seal and it takes about 15 minutes to replace a propshaft seal.

Thanks Elvin ... :) ..... cryptic, but very useful.

That being the case indicates that I'll find the prop seal easily accessible and removable merely by pulling the prop.

Two bolts hold the propshaft carrier in the gearcase. Remove them, ease the carrier out and R & R the seal.

Thanks Elvin and Greengrass ... sounds simple enough.

I've torn down motorcycle racing engines to a pile of parts and put them all back together right many times, but ... I've only had some experience with the simple carb and ignition repairs/set-up on outboards and have never touch anything below the powerhead.

This, however, doesn't sound like rocket science. The local dealer is getting the seal, so in a few days all should be finished.

Thanks again ...

1/4 mile N of Nebraska and Fowler....The baddest part of town. When we open and close we have to ask the crack addicts to move away from the doors

After leaving Apollo Beach, I lived just outside the Tampa Int'l back gate on Hale Avenue - 3 blocks from the stadium ... very similar situation. :)

A guy I used to fish with lived near the "Riverview Restaurant, just south of the dog track ... he had it even worse, but ... I liked that area very much and miss it.
