"Cleaners" are more likely to do more harm then good.
Aside from fixing the actual problem, camshaft/lifter/rocker shaft wear, a fresh oil change would do the most good.

By all means throw your money away at all the suggestions of fixalls and snake oils that are likely to follow. :)

Can we be a bit more specific? Does it do it all the time or just at start up? How long has this been going on? I do know that these engines like a 40 weight oil, In that range, I would recomend Chevron Dello 400, Yes, I know it is a deisel oil, but it has high detergents and a great aditive package! Also it is a Hydrocracked conventional oil that makes it as close to a synthetic as you can get and not pay the price of a full synthetic! Very Good oil! They have a 5W30 if you can find it, might be better for the winter! 15W40 in the summer!

Also if it is at startup, it could be the brand of filter you are using, this engine I beleive has the filter on the side, You need a good anti drain valve on these engines! Pure one or a Wix (Napa Gold) will be fine! If you have a Fram on there now, I guarentee its junk!

Johnson110,dont sweat it if the motor makes a bit of a "deisely" noise. Many folks think they have a problem with those motors but they are designed to sound that way. They all do until 1996 when they shortened the pistons.Charlie

What does the oil pressure guage say when it is warmed up? If it has decent pressure, I wouldn't sweat it. I am trying to remember if the 4.0 needs periodic valve adjustments or if it has hydraulic lifters. My better halfs rig is a 93 Grand Cherokee with 4.0 and the engine runs quiet except for right after startup there is a faint ticking but once oil pressure comes up it is quiet.

Jason, I have about 60-65 lbs cold, appox 30 lbs hot idle, tap the pedal hot her pressure jumps right up, put some marvel mystry oil in crankcase, to see what happins, i think they all develop a tap at high miles.

Your correct here, and most do. It's something that souldn't concern you a great deal.
It certainly isn't something that is designed into it.
The mystery oil won't compensate for the valve train wear.
I'm just glad you didn't open a can of worms by using the "cleaner".

At 130K our Wrangler had a mess of oil leaks and an exaust manifold was cracked and lifter noise.
I did a valve job, a mild off-road cam with lifters, resealed the motor. It purrs @160K.
Since I've done all the mods, suspension/3" lift, Eagle radiator, added A/C, 2.5" exaust, rear locker. I'll probably keep it forever.
The wife keeps the C-class in the garage and uses the YJ as her daily driver.

Your oil pressure sounds good. You want to have at least 10 pounds per 1000 rpms. Have you checked for exhaust leaks? A bad exhaust manifold gasket can give you a constant ticking sound.
