A long time ago I had an old Mechanic (I be one now) show me this! If you are replacing universal joints take them apart and wash all the new grease out and assemble them again! You do not have any I dea what grease is on them when new and you can bet it isnt high quality! Also you would not believe the amount of machining residue that is left in the cap, they do not have enough time to clean them adequatly! If you wipe them out with a white rag there will always be black residue on it!
Just something to think about!!

i didn't hardly catch the intention. i'm thinking it is not the norm to fix u-joints, but to replace them instead :D maybe you're meaning we should all be reworking the new ones that come in the box? i dunno. i assume they're minimully lubed, so i put the greasegun on them after they're in place. we had some good info come down from senyor skinny on the 630AA by lubrimatic. that's what i pump into the ole jeep fittings now :)

I thought it pretty obvious I was talking about NEW U-joints, but maybe I didnt make myself clear! Although they are a very overlooked Item, Think about it, when was the last time you checked you universal joints??

Parts are pretty scarey anymore, you never know what you are getting! I got a set before these that were not even machined in the main shafts under the caps! I sent them back!! Its hard to beat Spicer for universal joints!

ok, i understand now.
-i bought a ujoint that was missing a cap once. and i also got an oil filter with no threads(untapped). i caught those before leaving the store. but i got home and had partially installed a tow hitch and didn't have the little 'spring' deal to put the bolt thru the frame - that bit! i was able to make one with some fence wire.

u-joint stuff is a way of life for 4x4 guys.. never thought of that tho...

my Blazer has all been swapped out to 1 ton stuff these days so mine have been fine, but back in the day i'd blow up the smaller ones in the mud pits on occasion. always try to buy quality parts, but ya never know i guess. ;)

hehe, you guys ever see square driveshafts? lot of guys are running them for spares in their trucks to get them off the trails. easy to build, easy to store... wouldn't wanna fly down the highway with one tho ;)
hehe, Raven, she passed about 5 yrs ago... great wif... ummm dog ;)

thanks on the Chevelle, thinking of selling it this spring to really go all out on the truck.. the Chevelle's done to the hilt tho. polished ss firewall, real steelbraided lines, polished intake on the 396, custom Autometer dash and interior, fuel cell, custom blue pearl(turns purple under certain lights) blah, blah, blah... it's hella fun for weekend blasting, but not the most streetable vehicle.. don't use it much anymore... gets maybe 50 to 100 miles a year. :(

i'd like to go off on the truck with a MPFI for the 383 i just finished and a bunch of other stuff. the Blazers a daily driver so i'd rather have the coin in that than a car that sits most of the time..

Funny this thead should come up.

The U-joints on our 1988 Crown Vic just went. they have been fine for over 148,000 miles and we got a call last friday night and we had to get somewhere, fast. We booted it running over 100mph with the poor old car, the next day it starts makeing a big "CLUNK" when shifting into gear and had had a viberation over 50mph.

We are gonna replace them one of these up coming Sundays.
