Re: Major Malfuntion..!

If you are using XP outlook express needs Microsoft word for a spell checker. Pretty expensive program. It usually comes with Microsoft office and the program cost around 600 bucks. Older operating systems will use microsoft works. I dont think there is a way to make it work with XP though.

To check the spelling in messages
Outlook Express uses the spelling checker provided with the following Microsoft Office 95 and Office 97 programs: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. If you do not have one of these programs installed, the Spelling command is not available.

In the New Message window, click the Spelling button on the toolbar, or click the Tools menu, and then click Spelling.

Tip
To customize the way your spelling checker works, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then select the Spelling tab.

Well, Maybe Now I know why this 'puter was in the Bargin Bin at Dell's Scratch,+ Dent Sale......

I take it that Microsoft WordPerfect is Not the new improved version of Microsoft Word......

I'm not sure what the HP used for a support program Originally.... It had a virus attack a couple years ago...
My Bud reformated,+ partitioned the drive... Then reloaded with WindowsME..... At that point I had No Spell Checker... He came back,+ loaded all 3, Word, Excel, + Powerpoint... I Think..
Anyway Spell Checker worked after that.....

I can see where I could get into All Kinds of Trouble at that FileLibrary...... Some Cool Looking programs there.... It'll take me Weeks to surf all that......
'Course, I Don't Know What Most of them Are....

Re: Major Malfuntion..!

bondo, sorry bud, wordperfect is a completely different program than word. go back to dell and you'll see the software selections you could have made. if i remember correctly, it would have cost me about $150 extra to just add word to my unit.

Bondo,

as Matt said, wordperfect isn't a Microsoft product. But, if you want sepll checker in express just go to this link, download and install the free program and it will ne like it was. The other option is to get your self a copy of Word or Microsoft Office.

This is the program the people over at Dell are recommending on their boards to solve your problem:

http://www.geocities.com/vampirefo/

If you rewind your memories you'll get to a point when everybody used WordPerfect. Then came the days of financial trouble with WP and they switched owners a couple of times. During this hard period Microsoft ran a whole series of campaigns to push Office out into the market.

It was no secret that WordPerfect had the majority of the market for a good reason: It was a better program , especially when using graphics and pictures in documents.

Try a Word doc. of some 50-100 pages with 20-30 graphs and you'll know that even the latest version struggles with keeping formats, pics. places etc.

Eventually WordPerfect ended up with Corel Corp. (ie. CorelDraw), and that gave them another leading edge in graph/pic handling.

Obvoiusly WP never has been a close friend of Bill Gates'. Microsoft puts effort into excluding potential competition from their otherwise rather well defined standards. Outlook will not recognize any add-on or add-in from WordÅPerfect.

BTW - WordPerfect is available for Linux, another of Bill's preferred hate objects :D

Bondo,

A word of caution: As any program you install adds to the registry, do not install more programs than you need.

Even if you run Add/remove or included un-installers, there always will be a pile of records to clutter the registry, left.

There are utilities to clean and fix both disks and registry. I use 'Fix-It' regularly and find plenty of errors or misalignments. All (Windows-)pc's grow sour along the way, but after a good 'fix-it' the puter really improves.

Re: Major Malfuntion..!

Hey UU - Remember the DOS days? Lotus 123 and Wordperfect ruled the world and then they were slow to embrace Windows and lost their crowns.

There are some good registry repair/ cleaning utilities but unless you are a power user (I know you are UU) be very careful. If i had a nickle for every registry corrupted by these utilities (even by me on occasion) I'd be wealthy :D Even Norton's Cleansweep can be dangerous...

One program I recommend highly for all is GoBack deluxe (now owned by Symantec, the company the makes Norton antivirus and Norton Utilities). It allows you to roll back your system to a previous time w/o any data loss. I will not run a PC w/o it. Prevents rouge SW or corrupt driver/kernel from keeping your system from booting. I think you get a basic version of it with Norton SystemWorks these days but get the Deluxe version for the added robustness and larger roll back window. It is light years ahead of the system restore featir in ME and XP and as I said, you don't have to be able to even boot the computer to get to it. If you load some crapy piece of SW, forget uninstalling, you just roll your system back to before you even loaded it!

Norton Utilities is also a good idea for defragging and finding and fixing common windows problems.

Re: Major Malfuntion..!

Yes the good 'ole days of DOS....circa 1984
I started out with a 8088 processor with DOS, blazing fast machine, it had 640kb of memory.
Then came DOS 6.0, I stayed with that machine until I bought a P-150 with Win-95 installed. I missed Windows 3.1 completely.
1984 price for a 8088 machine, 16bit color moniter, and a dot matrix printer was 3K.
I remember when harddrive size cost a hundred dollars a gig to go to a larger size. Same for system memory, it was very pricey in the late 80's until the mid 90's. An external 5.25 floppy reader was 1k.

Norton SystemWorks Is on my list of Must Haves....
I'll make sure it's the Deluxe version......

Are you saying that Rather than Uninstall, You Roll-Back Instead ???
Poof, It was Never There ?????

I loaded the Spell Checker that tylerin suggested last night.... Haven't Really used it yet....
I Like the Idea it's Ava. in IE as well as OE.....

For the Causal User, Me, Which ZIP Utility is a Better 1 ??? I've saved these, but loaded None as of yet....

zipfull
zip56_f
ice400
100ziper

I found these at the library... the explanation is about the Same for all 4.... I just need 1 to unzip files occasionally....
Remember, I'm more of a websurfer, than a computerdiot... I've used a zipper/unzipper Maybe Once a Year...
