The problem started last night and is continuing today.
When trying to visit sites, 95% of the time, I get this :
The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable......

Or..
Cannot find Server....

If I refresh 5-10 times, I can usually get thru, but not always. And this doesn't work on secure sites.

I am using Internet Explorer, and have a satellite isp. I have gone thru the internet/lan settings, and all are set properly. I have rebooted twice, run ad-aware, dumped cookies and files, done virus scan, and scandisk. Defrag is done weekly.

Several times I have gotten this:
You are not authorized to view this page
You might not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied.

If you believe you should be able to view this directory or page, please try to contact the Web site by using any e-mail address or phone number that may be listed on the ebay.com home page.
You can click Search to look for information on the Internet.
HTTP Error 403 - Forbidden

Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: internet troubles

Sure sounds like connectivity problems with your ISP. What have they said?

Nevermind, gotta be a problem with Internet Explorer.

I am having no problems at all when using Opera as my browser, but still have the problem w/IE.

Will have to re-install if I can't fix it.

Re: internet troubles

Roscoe, there is a fix-it/repair tool somewhere in the computer that will scan the IE and make repairs. I can't remember exactly where and how I got there as I was having the same problem and I called SBC/Prodigy and one of the ISP techs ran me through it. They do not charge for helping you out, give them a call.

Re: internet troubles

I uninstalled the security update download and rebooted. Its working fine now.

???

Of course, the automatic update downloaded it again, and to test it, I installed it. Boom. The problem was back. Deleted again and all is fine.

Hopefully running without this will not make me an easy target for hackers.

I am using zone alarm and Nortons internet security.

Re: internet troubles

When I went to cable I had a similar problem with my XP machine. I believe it was called proxy settings had changed to a default and would no longer work with my isp. Yahoo this weekend was giving me the same results you mentioned on saturday. I could not use it as a search engine but comcast search worked fine. If you have a tech support number for your ISP give them a call and they may be able to help

Re: internet troubles

I have several friends that came to me with the same or similar problems. If you go to Google and do a search for - winmain.exe - you will find some very interesting info. Here's a sample:SYNOPSIS:

On July 28th 2003, a new means of exploit was discovered by the team at spywareinfo.com which involved a program rapidly disseminating onto the computers of innocent victims called "WINMAIN.EXE." The source of this file is currently unknown, though it appears to be rampant, likely placed onto machines as one of those "hijacker/adware" packages. Normally such programs are at worst a privacy issue or an annoyance. However, this event portends an entirely new method of attack against machines, given that the offending executable activates a particularly dangerous piece of Internet Explorer and exposes a serious new risk to all machines, since this executable runs throughout an entire Windows session, and does not possess the ability to distinguish the source of scripts which it will run. This particular exploits drops a file called "C:\WINLOG.HTML" which is called, and can be located, but future exploits will be able to generate other files with other names in the future. This exploit is merely the opening salvo in what we expect to be a whole new approach to trojans.

Antivirus programs don't always catch it because it diguises itself as actual microsoft internet explorer files. If you have any freeware like "iexplore" or others, it comes into your computer that way.
Good luck, I know one guy that became so frustrated he went and bought a Mac.
