I have read the help section and I am still confused. I want to be able to run it only when I want to, not at every start-up. Where can i change the settings?

Dont remember how I did it, but it can be done. If it is a tsr with the little icons on the bottom right, then r click on it and see if there is an options menu. Generally search. Also check Start.. Programs.. Startup. That startup menu lists programs that auto start on startup. Just r click and delete the ones you dont want to auto start. Good luck.

If it's the same free Spybot I have, go to settings on the left and settings aagin and uncheck the auto start box.

when you first download and you are installing it the program asks if you want a tray icon and it asks if you want a desktop icon. Say no to both of these and it will not run at start up. you may have to uninstall it then reinstall it. I have millenium so it may be different if you have xp

You can tell any program to not run at startup by: Click start, run, type in "msconfig". Go to the startup tab, and make sure the program that you don't want running is unchecked. Make sure that the one you are unchecking is for sure not needed. Unchecking unwanted startup programs also speeds up your boot process.

that works in 98 and 98se. it does not work in 2000, there is no msconfig. I'm not sure about ME or XP.

Additionally, I have run both LavaSoft Adaware and Spybot. Spybot, by far, finds more things.

Got ya FF! I always missed that in 2000. I think you had to buy a aftermarket program to remove programs from StartUp when you were not given an option.

OK Ken, This one I do know!

Find the icon on your desktop for SpyBot, right click on it, left click on Properties.
See up on the command line the path to the program?? It should end with "/easymode"

Remove the forward slash and the word easymode and click apply.

Now run Spybot from the desktop icon.
You should now have full menus on the left hand side. Go into settings and find just about everything you ever wanted to set in SpyBot. It beats me why they would default to "Easy" mode (less menu options). Probably as not to scare most folks off by all of the options....

BTW, The update thing for the 'includes' file (bugs it looks for) seems to have a problem with some folks that are using proxy settings within MIE (Microsoft Internet Explorer).

It's sometimes easier to goto the Spybot website and just do a direct D/L of the 'update' file. After you get the file saved to your HD, just double click on the file and it will install itself into Spybot.

When you get SB running and while doing a scan, look in the lower left of your screen. You will see it counting off. The number after the "/" is the number of bugs it's searching for. If this number is in the low 5000 range, you don't have the latest "includes" file installed. The newest "includes" file has about 12,000 entries.

Be sure you look on the left hand side menus for "Immunize", and turn on both options within, this can prevent a browser hijack.

Ok...how does SpyBot differ from Ad-Aware? They both look for spy-ware, right? Is one preferred over the other?

Mine is not a paid version and shows 12800 files to check for. Don't mean to ask a silly question, but did you click on "Search for updates" and then get an information box that said "No newer updates available" with an OK box to click?

Boomyal,
If it shows only 5800 files then you need an update. As I said , goto SB website abd D/L the 'update' file and install it. As I mentioned, the 'update' thing within the SB program doesn't always see it's mirrors with the update files and reports back, No Newer Updates Available.
BTW, I'm using the same version as you..free version.

Jump over here Updates middle of page, and grad the "Detection Updates" file....You can grab the updated Tools file too if you want.

Re: Ok so I installed Spybot, now help me please.

18rabbit, I have both programs Ad-aware (pay for play version) and Spybot. I use both.

BTW, the pay for play version of Ad-aware includes a program component that watch your system and reports if a bug (or any program, for that matter)is attempting to alter your registry. If you're installing a program, you would naturally expect to say yes, go ahead and allow the registry change to take place. All other registry changes are alerts and should be treated as such.

I like the feature within SB to protect your browser against a hijack, a very common thing these days.

Re: Ok so I installed Spybot, now help me please.

Xcusme, it's running now. Showing 12k+ files. Thanks

This invasion is becoming an all consuming fight. I've got 4 computers running thru a router at home plus my dad's and father in laws. I'm running back and forth like a chicken with my head cut off trying to get all these things loaded up. I'm still dealing with my daughter's laptop key board issue which was caused by trying to rid it of all this crap. will probably have to take it to the expert who can do an online registry restore.

Xcusme, the link you provided was for version 1.2, version 1.3 is now available.

Plenty of sites offering it for free, this is the one I used:

SpyBot version 1.3

Version 1.2 offered protection for up to 12505 nasties (for me anyway). Version 1.3 offers protection for 13758 (to date).

Its generally concidered good practice to run spybot and ad-aware side by side but IMHO spybot is more powerful.

Aldo
