I'm bummed.

After investing several hundred dollars in raising chickens (roof, feed, etc,) my wife's 3 year old dachund got in and killed all 14 birds, with my 8 year old border collie/chow mix finishing off two more.

They have been penned but are constantly getting loose.

Sad to say, these two will be going bye-bye, since they cannot be trusted around any small animals.

It seems that when I was a kid, our dogs (mutts)seemed to get along pretty good with the farm animals.

Anybody have any input on what can make a good farm dog?

Thanks

Any dog can make a good one, any dog can make a bad one also. Its just the luck of the draw. You are correct in geting rid of your current dogs. Once they taste the blood and feel the victory they will never stop.

Growing up, always had chickens, and had a Golden Retreiver and a Black Lab,,, but it was a 4' fence to get into the chicken coop.

They always did enjoy butcher day though, all the feet they could eat.

Dachshunds were bred as hunting dogs, and chows, well, you know their rep. So, they were doing what nature trained them to do. Sorry you have to get rid of them, Marty.

.................

When I was on the farm growing up the only dog (a black back ally hound) we had that would bother the chickens was not raised there. I would get the chickens established, then get a couple of pups. The golden retriver we had would hold chicks in its mouth and not intend to harm them, if he killed one he would lay beside it and cry! I think if the dog/s are raised around them they are less likely to mess with them.
just my thoughts
Richard

My vote is for the goofy looking mutt who's on death row down at the pound...

Mutts make the best dogs, period.... :)

You didn't train the dogs to leave easy pickens alone - and it's the dog's fault?

A good dog is a well-trained dog.

First of all, excercise your dogs so they aren't bored and constantly trying to get out of their enclosure. Then reinforce that it is bad to get out of the enclosure. Then train them to leave the chickens alone.

Tim

The weiner dog got them?? wow
What kind of hunting dog is a weiner? just curious, Brian. :) .I always thought of them as slow weiner cute house dogs. Rats and mice maybe? Still seem to slow for that even.

Sorry about your chickens though...Did you have a rooster? in the mix? I've seen some that where fearse against small dogs.

I have to agree with Tim. It's NOT the dogs fault. They were, untrained, penned, bored.

I think I'd chalk this up to experience and wait on getting more birds until the dogs can be trained. They CAN be trained. Every lab I've ever owned would catch and carry around live crippled birds all the time.

Yes, Daschunds are hunting dogs. Breed and trained to enter small animal burrows.

two of my goldens got out while i was on vacation one year and visited a niebor farm about a mile away and killed 34 prized pullets,
I have determined that they will not harm anything that smells domestic, they play with hamsters, kittens ,a cocatiel , no problem, but a wild raccoon, porcupine, skunk, or penned chickens are all play toys to kill.
i suggest that you hand intro your dogs to the birds and try that out.
i paid for the birds, and fortunatly im the ACO so i didnt have to pay a fine.

As you know, roosters are called pullets. So, the city boy moved to the country & went to market. He bought a much needed donkey there, to haul things, which in the country is referred to as an ***. However the donkey had a habit of balking & the only way to get him to go again was to scratch him behind his ears. That's why it was such a good deal. He also got a rooster & a rabbit, which in the country is called a peter. On the way home the donkey balked, as they will. Along came a fine looking damsel who offered help. So he asked her if she would hold his peter, & pullet while he scratched his ***.

Oddjob, you asked, so here it is, straight from the American Kennel Club's website:
· The Dachshund was developed in Germany more than 300 years ago to hunt badgers.
Read more about them here:
AKC...Dachshund

Re: Bad dogs - good dogs

Dachshunds were origanally bred for getting badgers. They are not a bird dog. Border Collies are normally aggressive only to herd but a chow is a different story. They are very aggressive to most animals that are not aggressive back.
You said they are in a pen. That could be part of the reason. Penned dogs, if not trained can get bored and/or aggressive.(even trained dogs)
I have a spaniel/rat terrier mix that was the same. We got it from a rescue service. Supposedly it had a isssue with most animals(rat terriers think they are dobermans). We have had it for 8 years(in the house on the lower level, not allowed upstairs) and the only problem is it still hates cats(problobly because I don't care for them either).
All I know of dogs is what an old guy told me once. A dog is only as smart as the person who is its caretaker. You never own a dog. You are it's friend. Once it is domesticated, you are responseable for it as you are your family.
