Out here in our area in California we are having a terrible time with these agressive insects. Our poor grapes and tree fruits are suffering because of it. Hubby and I are enihilating them with traps and they are finally starting to decrease in numbers. I'm hearing this happens every 7 years.
Anyone else out there having trouble with these pests?
Bassy

Re: Yellowjackets/meatbees

I walked into my barn saturday looking for something and before my eyes could adjust to the lack of light I got nailed by at least 3 yellowjackets. They built a hive on the inside of the barn door...I knew I shoulda put that elk hide away. Fortunately for me I'm not so alergic to their sting, and I found a new use for wd40, kills 'em fast...they can sure be pesky some years, but don't seem to have any rime or reason as to how often this happens here, some years they are worse than others... :)

Yep, Chief, I was stung twice by the same one. Boy, it crawled up the shorts and oh man it is a pest to get rid of. They just don't back off. Should have seen me. I looked like a crazy person running from it and it just stayed with me. Hubby was wondering what the heck  was going on. I gained respect for those buggers from that moment on.
Bassy

I hate those little f'ers. My deck is completely unusable during the middle of the day when they're out. I'm getting my revenge though...there's nothing more satisfying than beating a hive of hornets to death with a shovel. :D

Myself I just wait tell its almost dark out, then toss a cup of gas on their nest! (keep away from flames) Kills any thats hit and the others go away, then they wont build there for about 3 years!

I picked up the tongue of my boat trailer the other day & got hit by 2 wasps before I new it. They built a nest in the tube frame. I guess I'm not using the boat enough.
I go through a can or 2 of wasp & hornet killer a year. It's nice to be able to get them from 10' away or so.

Just my luck. Got stung a cuople of weeks ago. Found out I'm allergic. Left arm swole up from fingertips to elbow. Now I gotta carry a sting kit everywhere.

Re: Yellowjackets/meatbees

It is very bad this year. I have gone out on so many calls now that I am twitching by days end. I never get stung, but it still is no fun. Best thing you can do is eliminate anything that attracts them. Get rid of gabage, do not leave food in dog food bowls, DO NOT hang those stupid wasp traps on the house, hang then 30+ feet away from the house, water the lawn at night (wet grass during the day attracts them), keep the bbq grill clean, etc. Don't think you can find "the nest", they forage in a several mile radius from their colony, you'll never get all the nests.

I went on a call last week where a lady was feeding raccoons from a bucket full of meat 10 feet from her house and wondered why she had thousands of yellowjackets around her house. She thought I would just come out and kill "the nest". I laughed so damn hard I about browned my trou. I told her to get rid of the meat bucket, problem solved, no charge. Have not heard from her since.
