My 1994 bronco is leaving a puddle under the oil pan when left alone for a few days so I took a look. The oil pan is literly rusting away and the casting itself is rather pourous.

Well in order to replace this oil pan I have to lift the engine. FUN!!! Since I don't want to have this much fun again, I was wondering if this could have been caused by the oil somehow? Are there brands of oil that are somewhat agressive toward the steel?

Any feedback would help. 351W w/auto a4eod

No oil will cause your pan to fail.
rwise is on the right path.

Re: Safe oil???

Thanks for the answers guys. This is a common problem with the 351 and for some reason the pans rust out and leak. To add insult to injury the pan can't be replaced without lifting or removing the engine.

I think I will have this done but I damn well don't want to do it again. Think ford got some bad castings, china perhaps?????? I use 5w-30 as the manual calls for and I change the oil every 2K cuz all this does all spring/summer/fall is pull my boat around. Serious duty for this rig. And what is an extra oil change or two a year. 3-4K a season = 2 oil changes. Just thought there might be some reaction to a specific brand of oil that might bolster this problem. Guess not.

In the winter it is transformed into a dogmobile so the dog won't trash my cars after a day in the woods. And unfortunately that season is comming on fast... :(

The pan is rusting from the outside not the inside.I would not wait to change it because if you run something over or if something pops up and hits the pan ,YOU ARE SCREWED.If you plan on keeping the vehicle you can put a coating on the new pan to prevent the same thing from happening.I drive my Jeep on the beach all the time and I had it undercoated very well.I noticed a lot of parts rusting after the first season I went 4 wheeling so thats when I had it undercoated. If it makes you feel any better,I had someone change the oil for me,the only time I did not do it myself, and they stripped the threads on my oil pan.I cant take the plug out because I will never be able to get it back in again.I will have to change the pan if I want to be able to change the oil through the plug again.I used my Topsider oil changer from my boat the other day and changed the Jeep oil .It was so easy that I may leave the plug as is and do it this way from now on.Charlie

CC,

Will the undercoating hold up to temps in excess of 180 degrees? This is the oil sump.

I was born and raised in central ny and was a mechanic there too and I hate rust. ford oil pans are a pain to change you can never get the motor high enough and have to remove the exaust and oil pump pickup and if the oil pan is rusted out just think of what all the other bolts and nuts are like. I love turning wrenches out here no rust to speak of except on my truck :(
