Charlie,
Most stoves plug in. You may need to disconect the power cord from the old unit and attach it to the new stove if the new stove does not come with one. Call the dealer and ask.

If the stove is hard wired, be sure the circuit is turned off at the breaker/fuse box before doing anything. That is 240 volts and probably around 60 or 80 amps that will fry you fast.

The new stove will have instructions on how to connect it. Best bet is to go to the manufactures web site, they usually have the owners manual and install manual available in PDF format. Just read it carefully before hand.

Mark

Good idea Mark.I guess I will have to take it a step at a time and I surely wont forget to turn the breaker off.Charlie

Also check the number of conductors required for the new stove. Most older ranges only used three wires, 2 hots, and a ground. Newer stoves require 4 wire plugs and receptacles. They now include a neutral wire. Look at your old plug. If it's got 4 prongs, you should be good to go.

Like Mark said, you will probably have to put a cord, either your old one or a replacement, onto the new range.

Also check the max amps on the new stove and change out your breaker if the new stove draws less than the old one. If the new one draws MORE than the old one, make sure your wire is rated for the higher load.

Well I thought it was too good to be true but when the delivery guys got to my house with the new stove they said the only installation they do is if it just plugs in to the wall. The sales clerk gave me the wrong info, said they would handle everything and my old stove is hard wired.Turned out the new stove was damaged so they will have to bring me a new one anyway.Charlie

Charlie,
Why not just add a box and outlet before they get there? It would only be roughly 10-20 bucks for materials and a little of your time. That way if you ever want to move the stove for cleaning or something, you are not limited by the cord length.

You have a good memory you screwy Wabbit!!! Unfortunately we had some emergency repairs to make to the roof and gutters that had to come first and the appliances went on hold until now.The outlet box sounds like a good idea Sangerwaker so I have rescheduled for delivery and I may stop by the Home depot for the materials on the way home today.Charlie

Charlie,
If Home Depot sells Leviton devices like they do here, here's a list for you.

Leviton 279 flush 4 wire range receptacle
Leviton 4934 plate
2 gang remodel box (deep)

You could also just use a surface receptacle and be done. Leviton #55050.

Re: Got new elect stove, swap wiring?

This has turned into a saga. After the first delivery was a damaged unit I rescheduled for a Sunday delivery and this time no one showed up or even called.Turns out they screwed up and put me for the following Sunday.Sooo They rescheduled me again for this past Tuesday and I got a call Tues morning that the unit the were about to bring me was damaged and they are currently out of stock. The soonest they can get one to me is Sat or Sunday so I will see what surprise Sunday brings this time.I called the store a few times and stressed my inconvienience without loosing it and they are going to take off 15%.I will believe that when I see it but $90 is $90 so I will take it.If something goes wrong this time I will give up on Lowes.By the way, when I disconnected the old stove there were only 3 wires.Easy even for me.Charlie

$
