Bought MicroSoft Works 8.0...got the word processor and such and I need one. Well....popped the disc into the drive to load and the puter shuts down. Won't do nothin'. Little green light on the tower is still on but nothin'. Hmmmmm....OK...close all running programs, reboot. Load disc and......shuts down. Same thing. "Well" says I, lets reload Windows and see what happens. Reboot, shut down running programs, pop the disc in and presto! Puter shuts down again. Everything is working that I have loaded. Run virus scan and the "clean out the crap" program. Still shuts down.

Barlow.....I want that sledge....unless someone can tell me whats' goin' on here.

Well, hmmm...

What OS version is it? 98, Me, 2000, etc...
Do you have enough space on the hard drive?
Do you have as much RAM as is recommended by the software?
Does your cd-rom drive read other dics properly?
Is the disc clean and free of scratches?

Just some thoughts. Sounds like there is something wrong with the autoplay on the disc to me, but if you can't even put the disc in without the computer shutting off, I'm not sure how to disable that.

Re: Think My Puter Has A Bug.

I have Windows XP Home Version installed.
Plenty of disc space and ram is 512.
Disc is free of scratches and such.
Haven't run many disc's lately. Seems this just popped up. I figured I could at least reload Windows but the thing shut down again.

I'll get the window that says the program is preparing to install...couple seconds and the thing shuts off.

OBJ try out a different cd on your computer and see if it freezes on ya. If not, then you know theres something wrong with the cd.
If it freezes with ANY cd, then I'd do a thorough scan for viruses and adware. Below are the best virus and spyware removers available (for free)

www.grisoft.com - AVG Antivirus FREE edition
www.lavasoft.de - Ad Aware Spyware remover
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy

Does it "blue screen" or just shut itself off?

Re: Think My Puter Has A Bug.

Well guys....After the disc wouldn't load, I ran all the "anti" stuff I got....McAfee, Spybot, even did the "scan disc" and defrag. Disc still won't load. I even tried reloading the windows program itself, XP Home Edition and when the XP tried to load, the puter shut down just like the new MS disc did. No blue screen or nothin'...just black screen. Have to shut the power off to the puter and turn it back on to get it to come back. I'm nuts. Going to look for Barlows sledge. Maybe that will convince the puter not to be stubborn.

EDIT: Sorry guys....thanks for the come backs...I sure do appreciate it... :)

Sounds like a CD player problem uninstall it and reinstall. You may want to try a different driver.
The problem is not related to Works 8, which you should not have bought in the first place, I'd rather use notepad, Openoffice is free and it's very good.
http://www.openoffice.org/

So what happens when use a different cd....?

Re: Think My Puter Has A Bug.

Is your computer still under warantee? If it is you can give the computer company a call and they will try to troubleshoot but when all else failed they would most probably replace the cd drive (again, if the computer is still under warantee). Be prepare to wait a while for the tech support to help. Most of the major computer tech support is now located oversea like in India, Philippines, etc... (Language problem.)

that could be so many things, if you have another drive handy try that. Does your BIOS support event logging? Can you get back up enuf with it to get to the event veiwer and see what errors are there?

Re: Think My Puter Has A Bug.

For future reference; don't buy Windows XP HOME, buy Windows XP PRO instead. For a few more bucks, it is a far superior product. Home is a stripped down version of Pro and seems to have many more issues than Pro.

I suggest trying the CD in a different machine to be sure it is readable. If it is, then go buy a nice DVD/CD burner to replace that CD drive so you can take advantage of all the neat things you can do with that machine. ;)

Yes, it could be IRQ problem....Have you installed any new hardware or sofware lately..?

Is there a floppy disk in the floppy drive...?

I still think it could be adware or spyware.
Download HijackThis from here>> http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/hjt.zip

Run the program and click the scan button, then copy and paste the results here and we'll see what creepy-crawlies you have!

Could be, but from the symptoms, I'd still think it's a problem with the cd itself, cd-rom drivers, or irq's, as mentioned above.

Try installing another program from a different disc. (Edit: I see you did that with the Windows disc. Since that didn't work, do the following... ;) ) If that doesn't work, if you have a cd-rom you can borrow, try installing that one and installing the program.

On a separate note, OpenOffice.org, as mentioned above, is a great, free, full-function office suite that will run on most operating systems (including Windows) very well. I've used it (and its predecessors) for years, and it has really come of age of late. If you get your cd-rom working, look into it. RThen return the Works discs and tell them that you don't agree to the licensing agreement. They used to stick that in the package where you have to open it to read it. Do they still do that?

Hey Rudderman:
Thanks for the link to Lavasoft, it found more "spies" than the program I was thinking of buying. :)

Abbreviation of interrupt request line, and pronounced I-R-Q. IRQs are hardware lines over which devices can send interrupt signals to the microprocessor. When you add a new device to a PC, you sometimes need to set its IRQ number by setting a DIP switch. This specifies which interrupt line the device may use. IRQ conflicts used to be a common problem when adding expansion boards or periphial items, but the Plug-and-Play specification has removed this headache in most cases.... :)
