In the past few weeks I have received atleast 30-40 email viruses. It is usually Sober.I@mm or something to that effect. I use email protection through earthlink, so I have not been infected, and I perform system scans. <br /><br />What is the deal here, why am I being targeted? I have no money, no important files. The only sites that I visit are this one and another boating site. It just sucks, and I want it to stop and dont know what to do.

Re: Email Viruses

Well, you have 2 options.<br /><br />1. Use Web Mail, login to your ISP and 'Look ' at your inbox...if you see something wierd, tag and trash it.<br /><br />2. Go here:<br /> Link<br />(you're looking for Magic Mail Monitor)<br /><br />MMM alerts you that you have mail at your mail server, allows you to see what's in your 'In Box'.<br />You can click on any email and 'see' a text only version of that email to see if it looks legit. If it looks bogus, tag and trash it right off of the mail server, THEN run your normal email client program to go grab your mails. This way there are few surprises.<br /><br />BTW, the Sober.I virus targets truck drivers....just kidding!

Re: Email Viruses

Your email has most likely been 'grabbed' from someone else's address book. Not necessarly your fault unfortunately.<br />This is a serious problem now unfortunately and I get upto 30 and more spam messages a day. I use Mail Washer to filter all my mail first. As Xscuseme says you can look at the server and 'see' whats in your inbox, dump what you don't want and bring down the stuff thats yours.<br />Dont ever respond to any of those messages as that confirms the address used is a valid one and you will get more unwanted mail as a result. Most of those senders trade their mail lists around.<br /> <br />It sucks but there aint an easy answer unless you can get a new email address easily.<br />Google have a new mail service (gmail)running as a beta version which may offer some hope for you.<br />I have a guest subscription available if you need it.<br /><br />Regards :) <br /><br />Peter

30 spam a day! Thats all?! I get around 300. I use Mail Washer also and its a good program. My only problam with it is that if you are getting mail from someone on your friend list it will filter it as junk if you are not the first recipiant.

I use Norton Internet Security. It includes the Norton Spam Filter. It works well for me.

Re: Email Viruses

I would go ahead and change my addy but I've had it for about 7 years now. I like to pay bills online and frequent sites such as this. If I was to change it I would have to re-register with most everything and its a hassle with the bills. Too lazy I guess.

Re: Email Viruses

I have three email accounts. One I use to surf the net, one I use to buy things online and one for personal contacts with friends. I have had the personal one for over 1 year and have never receieved spam on it. The one I purchase stuff with gets about 10 spams a week and my yahoo gets about 20 per day. It is a good alternative to changing emails all the time. Could also be a force salesman from Ebay. Hard to tell. :D

Funny you should say that, as that is what I was thinking. I got the free spyware/adware thingy from Yahoo, and now have not had any problems. So far so good, but I not holding my breath.
