I purchased Microsoft Works 8 'cause I like the word processor and other features about the processor. Tried to load it and the computer partially shuts down.....screen goes off, puter is setting there with the green light on but won't shut off from the ON-OFF button. I have to unplug it and restart it. This has also happened with one or two other programs I have tried to load.

I keep my machine cleaned out, ie..run virus scan and stuff like that but don't know if a virus would cause a problem like this. Any help or ideas would really be appreciated.

Signed....A Stumped Wrench.

uninstall and reinstall

Files are corrupted, the installation did not happen completely

That is assuming that the OS and everything else is ok

Also many computers you have to HOLD down the on off switch to turn it off just pushing it will not turn it off, some 10 seconds before it will turn off.

Hi guys. I'm running Windows XP Pro. Don't have problems with loading all programs, just a few. I did hold the ON-OFF button in and nothing happens. It even goes into the power saver mode. Could it be something I could fix with a sledge hammer?

When I try to load it, It looks normal to begin with....checking system and what not, then....blank....puter stops. No warning or anything. No pop up messages...nada. That's about all I can tell ya'.

If Windows XP (or 2000) refuses to start, press F8 right after you turn on your PC but before the Windows log-on appears (it may take a few attempts to get the timing right). At the resulting menu, select Last Known Good Configuration to restore your Registry to an earlier date.

If this doesn't get your PC working, reboot and press F8 again, but this time select Safe Mode, and then choose Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Follow the wizard's instructions and pick an appropriate backup.

If you get back to the point to try to load it again, be sure your virus and pop-up protectors are not running and are disabled. Also be sure you're logged on w/Administrator priveleges.

I have heard that XP does not like Bud. Could be too much got into the computer. Try soaking machine over night in Miller. Allow to dry and then try the installation.

Good luck

Ok,
You shot my ideas down real quick.

I like eurolarva's ideas.
But you know, the best way is for the user to process the Miller/Bud first prior to soaking a computer.
:D

AK Chappy

Why don't you try this.
Click Start then Click RUN
in the BOX type msconfig
Click on the far right tab called Startup
Click Disable all then click ok.
Reboot
Then istall the program.

Click Start then Click RUN
in the BOX type msconfig
Click on the far right tab called Startup
Click Enable all then click ok.
Reboot

What you are doing is stopping all bacground programs from interferring with your install.
Then you are starting them again.
