Computer gurus, please come to my aid, so a friend can have his computer back and email home for Christmas ...

A friend here in Ghana has a Dell 4550 with Windows XP home edition. The problem - Norton utilities and anti-virus is loaded on it. His wife decided they should load e-Trust on it, so she did, without removing Norton. The monitor immediately decided to lock. On start-up the desk top would come up, but as soon as you would try to launch anything the hourglass icon would come up and the computer would sit there and do nothing for hours (Till you would turn it off). Ctrl+Alt+Del command would not even work.

We tried to get into msconfig from the start-run menu, but again the hourglass would come on as soon as you would click on Start.

We continued playing with it, till now when you start it up, the welcome screen comes on, then you hear the chimes, then the desktop sans icons, then it stops. Right there. No icons, no response to any commands, no nothing.

Any suggestions that we can do to get this Dell up and running?

Thanks in advance. You guys have been great in the past and have always been able to help, I have no doubt you will be able to again!

until someone more savvy than I chimes in, maybe try booting to safemode, using the F8 key, go to add/remove programs and delete e-trust. Then reboot and see what happens.

Thanks Guys! You just made a couple of missionaries in Ghana very happy - now they can email home to their family.

I couldn't get the F8 key to work, but for some reason pressing the n key first did. Got into safe mode and took Norton and e-Trust out. Started up and worked beautifully. Removed Norton, back to safe mode to put e-Trust back into start-up, and everything is fine.

Again, thank you and may God bless you richly! Wish I could share the grilled red snapper meal I am getting for the help with you!

Merry Christmas
