Any suggestions for a really good high quality photo printer? I have an HP932C and the ink cartridges cost a fortune and the quality of the prints are just not even average. I understand they have models now that allow you to replace individual color cartridge/tanks. Invested a wad in a new camera and accessories and now I can't print them at home! GRRRRRR

Re: Photo Printer

I agree with choosing Canon. I have the i850 photo printer, about a year old ($140 back then). Got very good reviews as photo printer, works well with Canon and HP paper. Ink cartridges are about $10 for each color, so you only replace the color that ran out, not an entire 3 color cartridge when one color runs out. We have printed hundreds of photos with not one problem.

I also have an older HP Deskjet 810c as basic everyday printer. Works reliably, but color cartridges are expensive.

My Epson is about 4 years old. That thing was always messing up photo prints. Drop outs, lines, big ink blobs, etc.

My brother is a big photo and film/video nut. After seeing my Canon, he went out and bought one.

One more vote for the canon. I have an i950 and love i. If your up for a challenge and you want to save some $$$$ on your prints, get refill kits from here --> InkjetGoodies. Have been refilling mine with a kit since I got it and the photo prints I have done have been great.

They change so often I doubt it's still current I'm sure you could find one though.
I guess my only beef would be the 4x6 photo tray you have to turn a jog dial to print text and 5x7 or 8x10 photos my wife struggle s with this you have to be kinda strong to do it, I'v noticed the newer models have done away with this method.

Re: Photo Printer

Thanks for all the input, guys. I think I'll look at the Canons first. Mark42.... you mentioned that the replacement tanks are about $10.
Talking 8x10's.... and being able to get one processed immediately in high gloss for about 4.75 at a photo center.... any idea what price comparison\savings I might experience buying my own paper/inks? Certainly the printer would be cheaper than getting the prints done outsourced.

Re: Photo Printer

If you use canon inks on one of the 6 color printers you are looking at about 35 cents for a 4x6 and about $1.10 for a 8x10 from comparisons I have seen. I have computed that my prints are costing me around 8 cents for a 4x6 for the refill kit I use.

Re: Photo Printer

Thanks Boomyal. Will snoop it out.

Scooch_2, you are quoting ink prices right? Sounds like its way cheaper if the color is vivid and bright. My HP is so washed out looking. Very disappointing. Take the same print to Wallyworld and put it through the instant machine.... wam! Beautiful! Also $5 for an 8x10 and .36 per 4x6. 2 5x7's for same as an 8x10.

Bob_vt... which Epson do you have?

Re: Photo Printer

Gil,

Be sure that the settings are right for your HP. If the only problem is prints being washed out, it could be that the settings are wrong.

Re: Photo Printer

The printer costs I quoted were from Tom's hardware ink jet tests. I computed my own cost per page based on how much I have spent on ink and paper divided by how many sheets of paper I have purchased.

As for the washed out prints, it could be caused by the type of paper you are using. Some printers like certain papers better than others.

Re: Photo Printer

Using a Canon i9600 here. I use mine to print 1920's vintage railroad photo's to sell at train shows. I have not heard a complait yet. The color prints that I print from scans of medium format negatives&transparscenys that I shot are stunning. For 450.00 you be hard pressed to beat it............

Re: Photo Printer

Scooh_2, I've tried Kodak, HP and Epson papers to no avail. Checked all the settings, cleaned the nozzles blah blah blah....

Still very below average.... lets see what are the words I'm looking for..

Dull looking, no depth, flat... the colors are there basically... but not vivid like they should be.

Re: Photo Printer

Back from shopping spree. No printer yet, but I did find out from an HP rep that the model HP printer I have is not a photo printer and will not perform as one. Period. I do feel better about the printer now anyway.

Back to the printer issue... No Cannon I960's available. I did find one I900D (discontinued) $240. They did have a new HP 8450 that was really pricey but it was knocking the socks off of the competition with its print outs. New model. But again ink is expensive.

I'm still leaning toward the Cannon. Will try Boomyal's suggestion next.

Re: Photo Printer

You will get a bit messy when refilling the tanks, but the $$$ you save will be amazing. I was not a believer in digital photography until I started being able to print my photos right after I took them.

If you start doing a lot of printing on 4x6 paper, I would recommend you look at the "Epson boarderless 4x6 Premium Glossy Photo Paper". It runs around $15 for a pack of 100. If you like it keep an eye on the Office Max ads as they run a 2 for 1 special every now and then (I'm waiting for one now....). I think the paper is as good as the Canon Photo Paper but much cheaper. Make sure you use the easy photo print software if you are printing from the PC, and you will have great prints.
