I can find a lot about him after the age of 51 when he decieded to do the video... not that much before that! Yes he has made it into history.. but what drove a 51 year old American Male to live his last 30 years in the Wilderness alone? Was he once married to Bassy, LadyFish or Mrs.Link? JKing ofcourse.
Lets say from 0-20 he lead a normal life... from 20-50 what happened?? Am I doomed?
PS
Mrs.Link just read this and tells me I'm not doomed.. if I want to go to Alaska I can!!!

Darn her for getting up at 4:30am!
There no more **** :)

The book shed's just a little light on the subject. More or less just seems to be a desire of his and a brother to do this, Finally ofter a couple years planning and preping he just persued his dream. Neat story and yes I own the book and the video....To cool.

The name of the book is "ONE MAN'S WILDERNESS" about Richard Proenneke. Written by Sam Keith using Proennekes journals and photo's. 1-800-452-3032

The video "Alone in the Wilderness" is by Bob Swerer Productions and they use his journals and a lot of the video he took. 1-800-737-0239
We ordered from our local PBS while watching part of it.

neumanns
We got both also. But the book was borrowed by a friend the day we got them. Should have it back this next weekend. Now I something else to look forward to this Saturday :)

What an engineer and artist with wood Proenneke was.

Watched the video and was blown away with what he did with simple tools.

If you haven't seen it, do so. He can give any DIY-er a bit of humility.

Re: Alone in the Wilderness / Richard Proenneke

Mr ladyfish, At the age of 51 he had a bush pilot drop him off in the wilds of alaska with somthing like 100 dollers of tools and supplies that weighed less than a few hundred pounds and he Built a cabin...not just anycabin mind you, he even built a lock for the front door out of wood. and lived there a good many years. Just an awsome and titalating story. If you get PBS check and see when they air the story or get the video, it is only an hour in length but a better story could not be told. Even my nephew's at the age of 11 and thirteen could not take there eyes of the screen and both read the book after the movie...That says a lot as it can be toufgh to hold boy's that age attention.

Funny side note...a couple days after the movie the eleven year old took my double bit axe and took down one of my trees...Toufgh to be serious as i was dying with lafter as I know what inspired him.

If it sound's like somthing you would enjoy watching post your adress and I'll let ya watch mine, if ya promise to return it.
