I'm in auto body shop at my tech highschool.

There are 12 of us in the shop, 8 or 9 out of the 12 kids are absolute morons, just there wasting the day away not wanted to learn anything.

I was working on a rear quarter of a pickup, i turn around and see this kid take a lighter, and light a rag on fire,,,, he apparently didn’t know is 1/2 covered in thinner/reducer and that the thinner on all over the floor around him. The rag go's in flames, shooting flames. He takes it and throws it on the floor, and starts stomping like crazy on it, it had no affect on the fire. I see all this and sprint for a fire extinguisher, while I'm getting it off the wall, other kids start taking snow out of the bed of a pickup that was in the shop and throw it at the fire, which is not fueling from the floor. By the time I bolt back over with the fire extinguisher then moron picks up the flaming rag, thinking he can bring it to the sink, and burns the hell out of his hand. I had to unload the whole fire extinguisher to put the everything out.

This was the first time I ever saw a chemical fire really take off like that, it was crazy and it really did get my heart pumping, knowing all the other flammables that where around.

Good on you for acting quickly - and very fortunate that there was a fire extinguisher handy... What on earth made him want to light the rag in the first place ?

Kiwi,
your guess is as good as mine, God only knows what go's on in this kids head. He's been smoking weed almost every day since he was in the 7th grade. He's three years behind where he should be in school, and has one hell of a tender burned hand tonight.

Jim,
I bleave it, it happens all the imte. A few weeks ago a kid was trying to get his own car, one of then little nissan RX rwd POS's up on the lift, it was too low to get the arms under the body, so he was driving it on wooden blocks to make it higher, he dumped the clutch and sent the back tires into a spin, it threw a two by four flying backwards and slaming into the alum garuge door, that was closed, lucky no one was standing there.

Re: Chemical fires

You did the right thing with the extinguisher.
A good rule of thumb to follow, if you need to use an extinguisher, use it all. If you back off, and it flares up again, you will probably not have enough "powder" to put it out. So the best bet is to spray it all on the first time. Once used, it has to be recharged anyways.

Maybe you should be studying firefighting.

Quick thinking Ryan! You kept your cool long enough to keep a bad situation from getting worse. Ahh.. the great stories from the Voc Techs. I remember seeing a kid in machine shop have the arm of his jean jacket get caught in a lathe and snapped his arm in two. (Happened so quick, the other students didnt have time to hit the emergency stops) Then there was the idiot in carpentry shop who thought it would be funny to blow a nail, with a compressor hose, up a freshmans a$$. Needless to say, he wasnt back in school after pulling that stunt.
