Air Gun for air compressor

About 20 years ago I added an air compressor to my collection of "stuff" in my garage. It is a Craftsman with a 2 hp motor that gives 125 lb of pressure. I would be lost in my tinkering & cleaning without it.

When I got it I picked up an unrestricted air gun. I was told the OSHA (sp?) had mandated that no air guns be sold that put out more than 40 or so psi due to safety. I was fat dumb and happy with my gun until about a month ago when it died and could not be repaired.

Anyone know where I can get an unrestricted air gun?

What do you mean by 'unrestricted'? I have 6 or so, never seen one that is detuned so to speak.

I like ingersol-rand and snap-on. CP don't last.

Aldo

I might be mistaken about the unrestricted but I don't think so. You see for many things our U.S. government thinks they are smarter than we are so they pass these stupid regulations on this and that under the banner of "safety". Maybe the downunder folks are smarter than we up here are.

Re: Air Gun for air compressor

All air gun tips are made from rubber. The rubber tip is designed to blow out or split if the tip is over pressurized. If it does not have a rubber tip and has a metal tip the tip should have air bleed holes around it. These are OSHA approved air guns. The rubber tip on the air gun could be removed [cut rubber off tip with knife] to reveal a solid tip [OSHA OUTLAWED]. I use OSHA approved guns everyday and am satisfied with product untill I need to do something which I really shouldnt be doing anyway. The OSHA approved guns do not restrict air flow they just have a design to release to much pressure i.e. tip splits/blows out or holes around tip for air to bypass.

Maybe thats just a home handyman gun, I can't imagine an auto workshop successfully using a restricted gun, 40 PSI wouldn't cut it. My best gun (newest & cleanest anyway :) ) is a 1/2" ingersol-rand, operates at around 90PSI.

Aldo

I use a handyman italian gun that has a metal tip, and run it at the same pressure as my nailgun.

You can make your own air gun or modify an OSHA approved air gun.

All the impact guns I have run at 90 lbs you have to look at cfm's at 90 most light duty guns run at 3.5 cfm,s at 90 to about 5.5 at 90 and range from 230 lbs torque to 400 lbs torque The output of your compresor would not handle more than about 3.0 cfm,s at 90 but at 40 it could handle about 4.5 cfm,s or less A five HP compressor portable type 20 gallon tank can range up as high as 7,0 cfm,s at 90lbs but most are about 5.0cfm,s So bottom line is look at the cfm,s at 90lbs when buying air tools or a compressor because at 40lbs it will be substanly higher cfm,s

Hmm I only have two T nail guns.. (old term) now called brad guns.. both have rubber tips that I only use for soft woods like cedar etc..(according to the manual) both are Stanley Bostitch and run at 120-125 PSI
I really dont know the details but I just looked at the big one. 16 gauge and it does have a notch in the center that I suspose could be called a air bleed hole. I'm going to assume that Reelpoor knows a whole lot more about this than I do. I'm just a novice and still use gogles! ;)

Wait, wait, I hope you havnt bought anything yet!

Go to your local NAPA store and buy what they call an automatic transmission line blower, they make a straight one and an angled one which I use, they are a great blow gun, have a rplacable rubber tip and nearly every bodyman I know has an osha approved one in there toolbox and one of these that they actually use everyday. They blow so much air, they have a kick to them when you turn them on.

Oh, and you can put a steel BB in the rubber end and break lightbulbs in the shop.

LD - Great idea with the BB!

I'm going to try some of the suggestions.

On the safety bit - These air guns can be dangerous if used irresponsibly. My uncle worked for Wright Aeronautical during WW II where they made aircraft engines for the war effort. I remember him telling me of a tragic incident of horseplay where a guy jammed an air gun into a guys butt and pulled the trigger. It killed the "victim" and the clean-up was, shall we say, messy.

I have a vacula (sp) blow gun and I have an "approved one) that I modified by pulling the end off and took a piece of steel brake line that the threads fit into the gun, braised the nut to the line and it's now nonconforming but works great.
http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=1174-000075041-200K-RET
just remove the brass end and make up whatever length you want

These things are available at nearly every hardware store/auto store/lumber yard/walmart in America.
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/NTELargeImageView?rfno=12010&storeId=6970
90 PSI with a standard 1/8" NPT thread on the end. I have like 5 of these laying around my garage...not sure where they all came from. :) I use it almost every time I'm in the garage, it's never worn out. The one I use has a hose barb adapter threaded into the 1/8" port to aim the air flow a little better. I use it at 135 PSI all the time with no problems.

I use the gun from a sandblaster. It's not restricted in any way.

Snap-On has a nonrestricted gun available with a rubber tip. I have had one for about 8 years and it works fine.
