Wheres the crud?

Just pulled a holley off of a Ford 351 that has been sitting for about two years, I expected to see all sorts of crud in the bottom of the carb, nothing, clean as a whistle, actually still had a small amount of stail gas in it. Looks great, gaskets dried up some, but no varnish or crap inside. Rebuilding it to be on the safe side, but probably would have gotten away without doing it.

So far I think its the oil that foules out the 2 stroke carbs when the fuel evaporates. My experience anyway.

Yep, and when saltwater evaporates, you're left with salt.

So you're saying gas doesn't turn into a solid and destroy everything it's touching within a month?!

:p

LD,

We have six or seven different blends of gasoline around the country now. The only thing you can count on is that it's all different and subject to change daily.

With that said, you got lucky. The carb must have sAt in fairly ideal conditions.

I'm not ready to make the leap that 2-stroke oil causes the fouling. It's just too little, by concentration.

Automotive fuel systems are fairly immune to these fouling events for one reason. They're sealed.

Fuels today are very light on the upper end of the formulas used. That leads to better emissions but also leads to excessive evaporation in boat/older vehicle fuel sytems, which are open.

All in all, it's a crap shoot. Fuel storage depends on what came out of the pump, that day, and what type of system it was stored in and where/when. Too many variables to predict.

Our deer lease Suburban sat for nearly two years in one place. We never put stabilizer in the gas. It started right up no problems, been running ever since.

It often sits for months, always starts perfectly.

Ken

My old jeep sat out in the rain for over 3 years with about 1/4 tank of gas. Not only did it start and run great on that gas, but it passed an emissions test so well the guy testing it was completely shocked.

I know you were being a bit fecicious (SP), with this statement, ;) But I did expect more of a mess.

This carb came off of an old 1985 Ski Supreme ski boat I have been restoring off and on for the last two years, The fuel filter was clean also, no moisture. Yes the boat was stored inside. Im about donw with it and will post some pictures when done. Its actually quite a nice boat. All new paint, carpet, opolstery and decals.

The intake that I have been rebuilding to put on my Merc 150 was a real mess though, but I have no Idea as to how long it had set around before I got it. It was so gummed up I had to pull the needles and seats apart with needle nose pliers. Looked like old oil there though so thats why I said what I did about the oil. The bowls were very clean though. There is no way an engine would have run with those carbs. Not long anyway.
