Damsel in Distress -Internet Connection Setup Problem

I had a computer crash and while trying to get everything set back up I'm unable to set up a dial up connection using the wizard. I'm using Windows XP.<br /><br />The modem is working properly and there are no interupt or port conflicts.<br /><br />However, when I use the wizard and try to set up the option for dial up is 'greyed' out. Only the broadband connection is highlighted, NOT the dial up option.<br /><br />I am in dire straights y'all since all my data in on this computer and I have no way of getting it off except via email, AND its my fiscal year end and all my reports are due. <br /><br />This computer dosen't have a read wirte CD and the floppy drive is not working, so I need to connect up.<br /><br />Please help.

I had a similar problem with a broadband conection with my son's machine running Windows XP. The hardware all checked good with no conflicts. I found that I had to go in and enable the network connection. I'm not as familiar with XP as 98 but I think I went into network connection, right clicked and then selected enable.

Depending on who your ISP is with you can download their installation software from another computer and install it on yours. Sounds like you need to update your computer and back up some files on CD.

I did check it and it is enabled.<br /><br />I did reinstall the ISP software and still nada.<br /><br />Could it have to do the the TCIP settings? If so, where do I change them?

At startup hit the N key it will boot u off the network shutdown/ startup/ hit N key/ use wizzard

If you are communicating with the internet over broadband, which you are, the TCP IP setting are OK.

No actually, I am trying to connect with a modem.<br /><br />Dolluper, I didn;t get any different screen with the "N" key during startup and I've done it twice now.

Just before windows loads or try safe mode F8 then the N key

scrool to windows click you have about 2 seconds to hit N key then go to start button /scroll to settings click /control panel ck/add remove hardware/ check it reckonizes the modem

Yes it does recognize the modem ad I also went into the device manager and it says its working properly

Control panel/Network+dialup connections dbl ck/check network is disconnected or just make new connection /click on make new connection / it will show whats running and whats not on ethe first screen after you dbl ck to open it ntw+dial screen

Dolupper thats exactly where I have the problem, it wont let me make a new dial up connection.<br /><br />The option is greyed out.

Ladyfish, <br /><br />The device manager shows that the hardware is installed and functioning. That's what I had with my son's machine. There is software that has to be enbled in Windows XP. I was able to ping my son's machine and get a response but Windows wouldn't communicate.<br /><br />What mail program are you using?<br /><br />Can you access you e-mail using web mail?<br /><br />Another thought, make sure you have dial-up networking installed. When you re-loaded Windows it might not have installed dial up networking.

Right ck on dial up connection in the netw+dial screen and hit connect see if it reconizies the modem when u do that

LI Chuck, I do have webmail thru Netscape.<br /><br /><br />I think is also has to do with my dialer.exe file. The reason I say that is when I try to log on to my ISP, it won't let me change or edit my locations. Also greyed out. I thought I would delete locations and see if that would help but it wouldn't let me.<br /><br />I am currently using my laptop and downloading another copy of my ISP software on a CD and give that a try. I will uninstall it on the desk top before I reinstall.<br /><br />You guys are really sweet to help me this morning.<br />If I don't ind a solution soon, this piece of %^&&* is fixin to take a swim in the Gulf of Mexico.

Windows XP is kind of snobbish, since it found a LAN connection it probably didn't install dial up networking. This would explain your problem. Maybe Dolluper can tell you how to check. I don't have access to a Windows XP OS at work.

Lan Connection Go to top of screen hit ?/tools/ internet opinions/ screen top hit connections/ bottom Lan set to local number
