Hello -

I can tinker around pretty good, but not an expert so I figured I'd ask those who are.. :)

My girl's Galant has a slight rubbing sound coming from the front wheels. It's there whenever the car is in motion - with or without the brakes. It gets faster as the car goes faster and slows as the car slows.

The brakes are not very old and I don't think it's the pads rubbing because the car drives smoothly.

My guess is the wheel bearings are going bad. Am I on track here?

Thanks!

Does the sound change when you turn the wheel one way or the other?

Although wheel bearings do go bad, it's usually only one side, uncommon to have both sides go bad at the same time. My money is on the C/V joint. Find a carpark and do figure eights, does the noise change while turning (you need to be accelerating on the turn)? Is the noise the same both sides?

Aldo

Thanks for the tips - I'll check it out in the morning and report back.

In either case, is it ok for her to be driving the car like this? the sound isn't very loud but she said it's been making the sound for a month now (..but just told me yesterday..). Typically she just drives to work which is only a few miles away, but she is going on the highway tomorrow about 40 mile round trip.

Think this is going to be a problem?

My BIL's mitsy libero makes a droning directly proportional to speed. It sounded like it was quite high up and we eventually traced it to the manual gearbox input bearing. It has been pretty constant for the last six months. I dont mind strange noises ...its when they stop I get worried.

A few things to check...

The backing plates on the brakes.
The disc brake indicator metal strips ...they are supposed to squel but sometimes they rub.
The wheel bearings are usually a sealed unit in the hub assembly and when they go they tend to rub and rumble like road noise.

Bob

You might want to check the splash plate
[backing plate] behind the rotors it just might be rubbing on the rotors yes on both sides I've seen that before [someone doing the brakes pulls themselve up using the plates for help]or whatever they get bent in enough to rub the rotor

Thanks again for the tips, everyone. Of course, the noise went away today so I'll poke around at it this weekend and see if I can figure anything out.

I'll post back if I find anything.

Again, thanks!
