I am just wondering what way I should go as I do want to go to XP Home but I am trying to figure out which would be cheaper. A new cpu or what I have now.

I have 128MB Ram( I know that's minimum you need)
Memory is 3.01 GB
Don't know if my processor is 800 Megahertz(will have to look)

Is it cheaper to boost mine up or to buy a new or used XP Home from our computer shops? Any idea what the cost would be for me to put in more ram and memory?(ball park figure would be good).Tks in advance for any help.

i would recomend buying a new computer since they are so cheap. Full systems can run you 500 bucks and if you already have the monitor and the keyboard then just get the box. For any system you should be running a min of 512 megs of ram.

Without 512 megs it will run so slow it will drive you nuts, my kid bought one of those $699 Dells and it was slow till he upgrade to 512. Besides I liked some of the 98 operating system that my XP don't even have--Bob

Re: Converting to Windows XP Home

Tks for the replies guys. I feel the same way as you Laddies and really like my 98SE but the support and everything else is going come to an end in June 2006(for ME as well) so I want to get it pretty soon and start getting use to it. I agree with skeeterboy that they are cheap to buy now a days but I guess i am just a cheap sake at heart and trying to save pennies which in the long run probably isn't a good idea.

yep I am in the computer "game" myself and I can assure you XP needs memory to run with any sort of speed and yes new computers are so cheap these days (even though I am not a big Dell fan)

I need to add this recomendation: DONT get XP Home, get PX Professional. It does everything that home does, plus so much more. Home is just a stripped down version of Professional.

Ditto to MArk42's comment.
Go for XP Pro. It has more of it's marbles supplied from Microsoft.

Peter

Here's a comprehensive comparison of the XP Home and XP Pro feature-sets by Paul Thurrott, staff writer for Windows IT Pro magazine. I would seriously doubt that you need Pro. XP Home/Pro feature-set comparison

Thanks for all your sites to visit and read up on and all your advice. I can see XP is the way to go but I never thought of building my own and BoatBuoy, I agree XP Pro would be far to much for what I need. Will go to our computer shops and see what they have and now I can feel more comfortable at the questions I will ask. Much appreciated......Ed

Stripped down is hardly how I would describe it. I have XP pro on my main computer and home on two others. The only difference I can even think of is that home doesn't have remote desktop. (and there are many freeware progams that are better anyway) Pro has better networking features, but it doesn't sound like malibu4u has a network...even if he does, home does a fine job of networking for the home user. The only reason I even have Pro is because I get steep discounts from M$ for using their products on my servers. I would never pay the extra $100 for it.

As for whether or not you should just get a new computer - definately. The upgrade version of XP home cost $100 by itself. You can easily find a whole new computer with home installed for $300...or a really nice computer for $500. I suggest you look at Dell's website, they often have REALLY good deals - often cheaper than you could build yourself. Dell's warranty is hard to beat...

ED - In addition to Sharkey web site go to newegg.com. They are extremely reputable and have prices that you won't find any local computer store even coming close to. If you can follow instructions, put together a model airplane or are reasonably handy you can build your own. I did and got far more computer for the buck than any Dell - - and you can add to it and change components as technology or your needs change.
