Last played when I was 15 (30 years ago). Have just bought a set of clubs and joined a club.

Question, how can I tell if my grips are correct for the size of my hands. Somehow the shop an I missed that point.

Cheers
Andrew

Re: Golfers

Hummm grips are usually 2 feet long that is plenty for most humans the only thing you look for are they are not shiney if they are re-grip them because if they are shiney they have no more grip

Re: Golfers

I should have mentioned that I was talking diameter. It is common practice to tape up the shaft to add extra diameter before placing the grip back on.

Cheers
Andrew

Re: Golfers

I know there have been no takers but for interest sake.

Took my clubs to the Pro Shop today. They measured my hands and they need to increase the grip size by "5 layers of tape". Don't know what that exactly translates to in diameter but when feeling a grip of a club that will be the same as mine I would estimate and increase in circumference of about 3/16 to 1/4". It feels much better.

Cheers
Andrew

Re: Golfers

I just saw this thread, and you did the best thing to get the advice, going to a pro shop. Glad they were able to help, but now the question is did it help your game?

"Pro Shop"?

Just how many $$ do you want to get into this?

Nothing against pro shops, they are what they say they are.

BTW, boating and golf don't mix with the average boater.

Pick your poison. :p

Re: Golfers

Hi DJ

In South Africa the "Pro Shop" is merely a chain of golfing stores who happen to have good golfers in attendance to offer advice.

It cost zip. I was told that when I bought the clubs they should have measured my hands against the grip size and made the adjustment as part of the service and purchase.

I get to pick them up today will only know on Saturday when I will be on the practice driving range.

Was at the range on Sunday past. Was encouraged to find that after all the years some of the skills have stayed. Was hitting most balls reasonably sweetly and driving 250+ meters with the one wood.

Not to get back into bad habits I have my first lesson this coming Saturday.

Cheers
Andrew

I am reasonably far from water so do not boat every weekend, perhaps once every three months. This leaves time to play golf. It is also an accepted business practice here and we get "corporate memberships" which I have gotten for my senior sales and marketing guys. The final reason is that my wife has also expressed an interest and I thought it would be a great way of spending time together whilst getting some exercise.

PS: Hit 200 balls on Saturday, what an idiot I can barely move, my arms, right leg abdominal muscles. The walking wounded.

Drive for show, putt for dough ;)

How many putts did you practice? Putting makes up half (or more) of your strokes in a round ;)

That's cause you are an above average golfer PB. I can turn a birdie putt into a bogey no problem whatsoever. I am happy when I break 85 and extremely disgusted with myself when I shoot 92 (or higher) ;)

OK,

Since Andrew, broke the ice on golf questions, and got some golfers to answer, I would love to toss out a question. I only golf 2-3 times a year. The one thing that always has me puzzeled, is what club to use to hit what distance? I normally just ask my dad or brother, but would like to know what and why for different clubs.

Thanks

Re: Golfers

Damn Dolluper, if you hit your driver 320 you need to get on the tour ;)

If I do everything correctly I can hit about 260 with the driver and my PW about 120.

You need to take your clubs to the driving range and hit a few balls with each one Jollymon to figure out how far you can smack a ball with each one.

Re: Golfers

GG did you notice 380-0 means as high as 380 all the way down to 0 I can hit them 300 plus on a good day pretty much a scratch golfer and I tried many turnie's but too many much much better golfers than me I'dd never make a living or even pay the gas to get to the turnnie's So only out with the boys now Play with a guy who was the Jamaican champ he does trick shots like 320 yards with his putter a real Pro but he still can't make it diffently look up to these guy's that can

I did after I already posted

I don't know how all you low handicappers do it, I am caught in a rut. I am a bogey golfer, always will be I think. I have a golf course about 1/2 mile from the house and I play a couple nights a week. What really irks me, is I may birdie a hole tonight and bogey the hole tomorrow. I lack consistency I guess.

Boy, ain't that the truth!!! I learned golf the backwards way (which is wrong - if you ask any pro). I played "bash the ball" at the local golf ranges with a driver or 3 wood. I never learned that magical "touch" that is needed from 30 yards in, until years later. Sure, yeah, I can drive the ball dead straight, 260+ yards. But sometimes, I can't chip onto the green to save my life. I finally learned to hit a nice gentle wedge shot over a bunker to the green, but sometimes, I'll go too far and hit the far back of the green - which leaves a ridiculous 47 foot uphill putt to the cup.

Golf is both fun and addicting. I am 44 years old now... That gives me 6 years to get my game in shape and maybe try out for the senior PGA! :p

Butch A.

Edit: Gaugeguy, you sound exactly like me! I have been known to drive a short 272 yd par 4 hole, and 2 putt for birdie. Then, the next hole, I fall apart and double-bogie a par 3 over water.

Re: Golfers

One big trick is to take 3 irons and swing them hard a dozen times before you step up to the tee it will loosen and stretch your muskles, then your can make that opening drive with ease as it sort of feels weightless, and your swing is smooth and not choppy with tense muscles.
