I'm trying to figure out if I should invest in cleaning the bottom of my hull. Tommays signature line haunts me because I know this beefy lady I have parked in my canal isn't as slow as she seems. It's an older sailboat (the year I'm trying to determine in another post) circa 1980 at about 22 feet. The hull hasn't been cleaned in at least 2 years and has about an inch of ocean junk on the bottom.

Around that year, do I have a lot to worry about if I scrape that junk off real quick and throw it back in the water without paint for awhile (no time or money, but I want to boat). I hear a lot about blistering and such, and I'm wondering if theres a chance that the barnacles and such are actually helping maintain the hull at this point.

I'm not too worried about goin warp speed with this thing, but a few more knots over the 2 or 3 I'm getting right now would definately shorten my trips around the island (and would make me look like less of a woman in front of the ladies).

Should I or shouldn't I at this point? Thanks guys.

Re: Bottom Cleaning

i am wondering how the boat even moves at this point ?

you will really enjoy sailing a LOT more with a clean hull we used to give ares a brushing at the water line every week and a dive down under at least once a month

the only way you would start a blister problem is if you damage the gel coat a lot when your cleaning the bottom

tommays

bprender, In most cases, if a boat that old hasn't developed blisters by now, it probably won't.. I'll bet it will be a mother to get clean tho, and if you haul it out to clean it you may as well thro some paint on it while it's out.. otherwise it will get fouled again very quickly...
