Question for TheOilDoc, Really!

My wife drives an 87 Mazda RX/7. Now Im not saying that I havnt recieved great results doing what Im doing, as the car has 290,000 miles on the original engine, but I have a question. What oil would you think would be the optimum oil for a rotary, as they have an oil injection system, and actually burn some oil like a two stroke?

My guess would be an aircraft oil.

Ive also always wondered what would happen if I just poured a TC-W3 oil in the crank case. Never had the guts to do that though. Only three moving parts though. I didnt do it mostly because I didnt know the actuall wieght of a TC-W3 oil and there are gears inside the rotors that I figured would shear the oil too quickly.

Background:

Bought the car with 120,000 miles, no Idea what oil was used previously but started using Castrol 20W-50. I immeadiatly started having severe carboning issues, it evidently was carboning around the exhause ports. I then in my infinate wisdom decided to use Dello 400 15W-40. (Even thoughI knew it was a higher ash oil), It fixed the carbon problem. I attributted that to the detergents in the diesel oil. However had to clean the carbon off the plugs every oil change. I ran this oil with no problems up to the 280,000 mile point, changing at 2000-3000 mile intervals. I then thought I would try a Synthetic even though I was advised against it, Thats just me, (15W-50 Mobil 1), This didnt work out too well, as it smoked more at start up, and actually carboned the plugs worse than the Dello did. (Go figure), I also had flooding problems, I think just because the oil ran away from the rotors overnight. I am now running the NAPA 20W-50 High mileage oil and it seems to like it fine.

Id love to know why you think aeroplane oil would be good Lubedude?? The temps that aircooled airplane engines run are totally different than water cooled auto engines are.. But I know you know that?? The additive package is totally different. Airplane engines are subjected to more lead than car engines ever were. Yes we still have leaded fuel. Got to keep the octane rating up you know. I know Aeroshell in their tech sheets tell you not to ever use aviation oil in auto engines.

I been running aeroshell 100w in my truck for about a year, fellers... :D

I wanted a 50 weight and that was the only sae50 that Sams had.. I figured, what the heck?...

The motor's old and tired, and in need of replacement, so I don't really care..

So far, 10k miles on 100w with no noticable ill effects as of yet... On the plus side, the plugs don't seem to foul as bad, and the oil pressure does'nt drop so much when the oil temp is 250*+...

My airplane nut Bud In ohio used his USED 100w in his old chevy van for years...

Aviation oils are ashless so I dont think there would be so much carbon on the plugs, also, even though the rotary is water cooled, the internal combustion in a rotary is very hot, they have oil coolers to help with the heat. They also hold eight full quarts of oil.

Im just trying to start a discussion about something I would like to know more about and I know that TheOilDoc has the answer.

You should stay with the 20w-50 now. With the miles on your Mazda. It is not good to go from a heavy to A lighter weight in a high mileage air or water cooled engine. And your question on the weight of TCW-3. When I worked for Airco a company that refines gas and oil. Our 2 cycle oil was SAE-30w sold to many private label company's. Tim

Re: Question for TheOilDoc, Really!

Thanks for the reply Tim.

This engine has the same oil preasure it had when I bought it, Same power, runs smooth and pulls hard. I have done some preventative type things such as I started running some stop leak at 200,000 miles as I know that they have gasket failures. I change the coolant every year. I also have put a Product called Militec1 in sence around the same mileage.

Im not an oil additive supporter, But this is a non scientific test Im doing on this rotary and my outboard. You can find it on the internet under Militec1. So far the only downfall I see is that its quite expensive.

I don't know, I was just fishing with the kids for bluegill and I hooked it. I wasn’t expecting it at all, my daughter snapped the picture and I let it go. That was the only big fish I caught that day. :(

Exactly.

I'm not about to help someone who, for no reason, has just called me a liar and accused me of some type of identity theft. I commend the moderators for editing his harsh words out of a thread that I wasn't even part of. This member's constant infatuation and contempt toward me is disturbing.

I would be more than willing help members with legitimate questions. But sorry, this topic is a troll.
