Quick background. I live on the San Gabriel river near Georgetown TX. The river bank in my backyard is basically a large limestone bed. We recently had some very heavy rains and the river came up quite high. After it subsided, it had really cleaned all the accumulated dirt, debris, and left a pristine stretch of limestone. In walking along the banks I noticed these objects imbedded in the stone. They are about the size of golfballs, very symetrical and appear to be some sort of crystal-like structure. They vary in color from Gold to Rust. They are extremely heavy for there size. My first thought was meteorites but they are not attracted by a magnet. Most are round but some are eliptical. I found one that was broken in half and the inner part has the crystals emanating in a radial pattern. Any ideas what I got here?

Re: Geologist or Rock Hounds...I gotta ???

Had it all over where I was from.... don't know the name but I know it's origin.

A few years back.... hot gases and magma were spewing up out of the ground, and the little bits spit up out of holes in the ground and spin (thereby getting the basic round shape). The air is cooler than the magma, so these spinning balls cool and solidify. When gravity pulls them back down to earth, the surface material is different than what was underneath the surface, and these balls fall back to earth and "splat" into the surface layer material and become embedded. As the layers wash away, you get these balls appearing. I have found them embedded in material different than the ball, or the same. Must depend on whether the surface was flowing with the same magma as spewing up.

They are as cool as can be. We found them at a place named "marble mountain" because they were EVERYWHERE, and they looked like marbles. Sometimes they work loose, other times they are embedded in a piece of rock. Either way, take a few and leave the rest for everyone else :)

Ahhh ok, didn't turn up anything in AZ. Geez I can't really find anything to identify or give me a handle on these. I have searched everything from volcano sites to every mineral/rock sites I can find. Cannot find any matches. Guess its just a phenomenon of undefinable source.

Take it to your local BLM office or a local Mine (phelps dodge), they probably have someone who knows.
