Re: Ammonium Nitrate and Water ?!?!?!
It's pretty pure (99-100%) ammonia nitrate used in cold packs. Do a google search and look up the MSDS sheet on Ammonia Nitrate.

I imagine you can go to a farm supply store and get the fertilizer grade possibly a cup full to experiment with.

It is VERY absorbant to water. You would need to grind it into a powder and dry it. A dehyrator will do the task. Once dried you will need to seal it up in a plastic bag along with a sealed water capsule. Once the capsule is broken you should get the reaction and the temperature will drop.

You might be able to abtain it pure from a chemical supply house however.... it is used in explosives, boosters, drug manufacture so... be prepared to get a knock on the door from a Federal agency DEA or ATF or Homeland Security. Your cold pack experiments may bring you more attention that you want or need.

Want a simple way to make ice colder? Add some calcium chloride (Look up the MSDS and you will find it safer and more legal to play with) to crushed ice. You will be amazed how much colder the ice will get.

FYI I am not a closet chemist I am a fully BATF licensed Manufacturer. I use my license in my special effects company and have held classes for the State Fire Marshalls/Officials on explosives.

The nicer term is Pryotechnicion.

If you see me running....keep up with me!

Bob
