Found a great deal(another may by both to sell) on another truck, 69 350/400 AC orig. havent seen yet. DMV penalties are about $800 to owner. Is there a way to get by this? Is in N. CA. Would still be a deal if truck is as nice as it sounds and I could make $ off of it to resell even afteer paying penalties. Thanks, Heinz

I doubt it Heinz. California has become merciless in collecting it's annual fees. You should know that. You used to be able to sign a certificat of Non Op but now you pay something even if you keep the car off the road or they back charge the vehicle for the full meal deal.

Could you title it (temporarily) it in a friend/family member's name in another state?

The last vehicle I bought was due to be impounded because of unpaid penalties.

I paid the owner his asking price LESS the penalties, and then sent a check to the DMV. Problem solved.

You can't do the same?

Might be a good idea ZmOz. For all California knows that vehicle left the state at the time the registration was not renewed. I doubt that they would keep a record of any inquiry for re-registration with expired CA tags.

I also don't know if they would look at an out of state registration to see when it was first registered.

You would want to keep a california registration or pink slip to show that is was sold in CA originally. I've heard that CA will not register cars that were sold new in another state unless they are a certain age or have XXXXX number of miles on them.

Yep, but I think it's only 8500 miles.
