I am getting lots of thorn bushes and weeds that just don't stop growing...at an alarming rate. I seem to cut the thron bushes, at least every week, if not sooner than that.
I want to get rid of all of them, for good!
What can I use to kill them?
Someone told me that if you put salt on the ground, nothing will grow there again. Is this true, or myth?
I need a good strong weed killer.
Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
B.C.

Yes Round UP will kill them. Spray the root bases and just be patient. Better to spray when the ground is dry. In about a week the slow death will be showing.

I did around my mail box early in the season and nothing has returned.

Bob

Go to your local farm supply, they have the knowhow and the stuff to do it right. Roundup is a good product but it doesn't get rid of all plants. Most important, whatever method or product you use, read the directions and don't mix the herbicides to other than prescribed, as some of these chemicals are useless if mixed too strong. Chief ;)

Ron, they are bush like and grow everywhere.
If left alone, they climb up any wall, or crawl 15 20 feet in one week.
I will go to a farm supply store, but round up sounds good.

Use roundup, crossbow and diesel oil. That'll fix em.

Boomyall has it right if you don't mind your place smelling like a truckstop for a week or so. Actually, diesel by itself will do the job, but the EPA wouldn't approve.

Heavy application of rock salt will sterilize the ground. But roundup works too.

I found the latest products from Bayer work better than the products from Ortho I used in the past.

fast growing stuff sounds like kudzo or some sort of ivoy,IF the leaves are broad or wide use the 2-4d with desel aded like bom said and you can also add a little dishsoap with it too that helps it stick and stay on the plant spray when its going to be fairly hot and no rain for a couple days.you may want to look into toridon,if its like trees you can cut them off at the ground then spray the toridon works pretty good on hedges.

Bob- my understanding is that RoundUp works by being absorbed through the leafs and working it's way to the root system THROUGH the plant. I thought it was important to spray it on plants when they were in a leafy stage, not to cut them down first and them apply it. I've also heard that one of the advantages of something like RoundUp is that it becomes 'harmless' once it hits the ground. Certainly not doubting your success, but curious; did you just spray the ground or did you actually spray the plants around the bawse of your mailbox?

Perhaps others have the lowdown, I'm certainly no gardener.

I have not bought the roundup yet.
Because now I am curious, do I spray the leaves, or the root?

Re: Getting rid of weeds.

chris when using round up mix according to the bottle dont over mix it works best the way it is suggested.afor sraying ll is right, round up works through the plant leaves down to the root just spraying at the base of a plant with round up will not kill the plant.the leaves must be sprayed.round up is very good it does disapate with out any harmful affects.but like i said it works best on grasses and narrow leaf vegiatation.

Thanks Ron. I am going to buy roundup later on today. I have alot of weeds to kill.
I like the idea of dishsoap, so it adheres to the leaves on longer.

Re: Getting rid of weeds.

Diesel helps the compound stick, dish soap is a surfactant not a glue. I works good to break the surface tension of the water/solution so it does not bead up and run off. Clover is a good example of a plant with a waxy surface. Water/roundup just beads up and rolls off before it can soak in. Diesel makes it stick but you can't use diesel with any selective weed killers.

Roundup is not selective although it is more effective on some plants than others.

I presume this is in a area that can not be mowed very easily once cut down. I have had good luck mowing down the nasties then hitting them with round up.
I also used a hose sprayer with a bio degrable soap and sprayed them. The next day hit them with a herbicide(roundup etc) and it worked.

Re: Getting rid of weeds.

No, I cannot get in there with a mower.
It was also raining today, so I could not apply it. Tomorrow won't be raining, so I can spray those nasty weeds.
All of this info is great. Thanks fellas!

Re: Getting rid of weeds.

I use vinegar for the weeds growing around my concrete and it works great(and its cheap). I also heard that 8 oz of Borax mixed with 2.5 gallons of water will do the trick.
