Yep, please remove my tools! Did a bad thing last night and I hate to admit it. Started removing the head off the drivers side of my wifes Intrepid. I did read the manual while consuming a six pack or so. I know I read that the two cam bolts were different from right to left. Okay I thought one is right hand thread and the other is left hand thread. Nope! :( Both were right hand. Cause I snapped the bolt off in the cam....yep, I deserve to have my tools taken away. Wife says the beer, but I don't think I can handle life without my beer.

So it appears that I either need to replace the cam or try to remove the broken piece. With it being hardened steel, I don't think I will be able to drill it out without destroying the cam.

Presently, I'm thinking about another motor.....did I mention the wife is upset with me?

Seriously now, do you think a machine shop can extract the broken part inside the cam?

Re: Tool Removal

Try taking a nut with an inside diameter close to the same or a hair smaller than the bolt. Stick it onto the broken off bolt and weld it on through the center of the nut. While it is still warm it should turn right out.

That is assuming of course there is enough bolt sticking up to do this. If not, check the machine shop and good luck.

I have done this too, it is all part of owning tools. Besides "the bolt was week with all the miles and needed replaced anyway!"

Re: Tool Removal

Thanks DD, that bolt is or was about 9 inches long. It snapped off inside the cam by about 4" or so. I searched on ebay and found an engine with 37K miles. Front end collision breaking the timing cover. I just may get it and use my existing parts......Except the friggen cam of course! :D

Re: Tool Removal

SS, I used to do this myself or have machine shop do the difficult jobs. Drill or mill it out and replace with an insert. They make some pretty good ones these days. I think its an easy fix for a machinist shop.
