Re: Wood deck sealant

LL, I used the pic of the boat as an example only. My house has large decks and railings also (all timber)- but I don't have a pic.<br /><br />I usually spend 3 or 4 days a year with the pressure cleaner.

Hey Bassy....i hate to say it but that pine deck will not last very long. Using pine you should have prestained it will an oil base stain on all four sides, Which now is still your best bet.<br />Your next deck you could use white cedar(best for a natural look) and holds up very well. Also there are better products than trex now...correct deck, perfection deck, and a couple others....this composites are nice looking and durable.

Re: Wood deck sealant

I recently (3 weeks ago) used a Behr product on my boat dock after pressure washing it. The product smelled like shellac, very watery, and drys quite fast. (almost too fast, it was hard to keep a wet edge) It comes in several different colors or clear. I chose cedar. the dock turned out beautiful but obviously I can't comment on longevity at this point..

The linseed oil and TRPS is working out great so far. Probably too soon to tell, but the color is turning out better than we expected and thye deck really needed some attention. Thanks to you all for your help.<br />Bassy

That's a good choice Bassy. A standard for many years for tje maintanence of logs in log home construction and wood shingle care. Apply as often as you feel the need, just wipe off any excess oil at the time of application. ;)

I can see where that would protect from moisture, but what about protection from the sun? Here is a quote from one site about deck preperation and maintenance:<br /><br />"Wood's exposure to the elements, particularly to UV light, will eventually cause surface fibers to deteriorate and literally fall apart - to the point of "dusting" under hand pressure. That damage extends into the wood surface in decreasing severity."<br /><br />Is there a cheap UV inhibitor that you could add to the mix to minimize UV damage?

I have never used it on plain pine (I think Mr. & Mrs. Bassy are going to regret that choice) but I have used it for years on treated pine & a merbu (hardwood) deck - absolutely no 'dusting'. Maybe the linseed is UV stable - dunno.

As I said earlier it's been in standard use on log homes for many many decades. It should do just fine. ;)

Doubt it; maybe instead it keeps the wood 'moist' to the point ti doesn't dry out and 'dust', as long as you redo it every year...The other thing the UV rays are supposed to do is make the wood turn gray much more quickly. Notice anything along those lines? Again, may not be an issue if you're power washing every year to clean...
