I can see where that would protect from moisture, but what about protection from the sun? Here is a quote from one site about deck preperation and maintenance:

"Wood's exposure to the elements, particularly to UV light, will eventually cause surface fibers to deteriorate and literally fall apart - to the point of "dusting" under hand pressure. That damage extends into the wood surface in decreasing severity."

Is there a cheap UV inhibitor that you could add to the mix to minimize UV damage?Originally posted by Dunaruna:
...A very cheap and simple 'soak in' coating is a 50/50 mixture of linseed oil and turps. You can recoat as many times as you like to achieve the desired sheen. And it's mould resistant....
Aldo
Doubt it; maybe instead it keeps the wood 'moist' to the point ti doesn't dry out and 'dust', as long as you redo it every year...The other thing the UV rays are supposed to do is make the wood turn gray much more quickly. Notice anything along those lines? Again, may not be an issue if you're power washing every year to clean...Originally posted by Dunaruna:
..... Maybe the linseed is UV stable - dunno.
