I've looked and searched and haven't found grates for my w/b. I had a bunch of 7/8" all thread that I made a grate with. It has lasted about the total of 4 months. In about another month, I think it is gonna be done with.

Being one of the white honky necks, I like to make my own stuff when the original can't be found. I have a bunch of those metal "T" fence posts. I have heard some call it T-bar. It seems to be harder than what the all thread was.

Do you think the T-bar will hold up longer, or what other kind of stuff could I use to make one?

1/2 or 5/8 inch round stock. Round stock will last longer than any stock with an edge on it.

Rebar is dirt cheap and would probably last forever. It's what they often use for grates over the fire pits in camp grounds.

SS find you some old unrepairable electric motors and knock the shafts out of them and build you one. Most of those shafts were almost stainless and will hold up for ever. I have one in my stove that is 4 years old.
Reel poor is right on here round stock will out last any stock with an edge on it.

I know this will sound odd, but what about old camshafts? Case hardend cast?

The rebar gets so hot that the weight of the wood bends it down into the ash hole ( :p ). Done tried that prior to the threaded rod. Sorry, I should have mentioned that.

I like the idea of stainless rod. I have some 1" stock, but only enough for about 10 of 30". Maybe put it in the area that tends to be the hottest all the time. Keep the ideas comin....Thanks

Re: Woodburner Grates

My woodburner is an enclosed type. The grate measures 12" x 30". Yes it is pretty good size.

How long are those spikes Bondo? I'm thinking that they may just be a bit short for my burner.

Thanks

Re: Woodburner Grates

Off the top of my head,.... I'd say the most Common spikes are 8"s,.......
I've seen shorter,+ Considerably Longer,........The Handle on the front of that Woodstove I posted around here somewhere,..?.. That's a Spike that's 12/14"s......
But 8" are the Common 1s you find walking along a Quiet rail line.......... ;)

Maybe used as the 12" runs,...staggered to each side as it's welded to the long SSteel bars,............

Are you sure you need a grate? I haven't had one in my enclosed" wood burners and they work fine.

Re: Woodburner Grates

JRJ, under the grate is my ash drawer. It is just a heavy guage sheet metal tray. If I built my fires without the grates, the fire would end up burning thru the bottom. That wouldn't be a good thing. :(

Bondo, thanks for the ideas on the RR spikes. My friend the scrapper said he has some buckets of spikes that he bought at an auction.

The make of my WB is a Combustioneer. Ever heard of that brand? They were made in Orrville Ohio. The company must be out of business or has a different name.

For next year, I'm thinking about the corn burning stoves. Surpose to be cleaner burning and less mess with them. That would be nice. Seems that no matter how you try to avoid a dirty mess with the wood, it always happens.
