What color kong is the dog going though?

The red are easy to destroy but the black one is the toughest. I also gave my chewing machine a toy called a tuffie which ha has not destroyed. Look at the web site http://www.mydogtoy.com/ or do a seach for a Galileo bone which is one of the toughest for aggressive chewers.

The 2 levels above red are...

Black - very tough

and a special black one by RX from a vet that will show up on xray if swallowed.

The galileo bone is super tough.... LOL of course it is only effective if the dog decides he wants to chew it.

All above mentioned (except for antlers-which I haven't tried because of availability) are man made junk to separate you and your money, and put man made crap in your dog. The only thing that last more (I WISH I could get 20 minutes on one from my now 1 1/2 year GR puppy) are the tried and true, the original, the one ANY dog has chewed on for EONS, a damn real bone. Ask at any butcher section, or look for soup bones. My last Golden would do in a regular soup bone in an hour too, but the new one I have now has a pile of FEMUR bones laying on the floor beside me (also asleep behind me), and she will wear herself out long before the bone. Our butcher in town at the meat store has a separate freezer section for dog bones. Femur's are $4. I toss mine in the oven at 375 for an hour. Petsmart also has sanitized real bones for about $5. And when the inside marrow is gone, smear a teaspoon of peanut butter in there. Good for the coat.
And did you ever notice all the brightly colored junk in Petsmart? Looks good to you and makes ya all fuzzy, but dogs are color blind. I told the clerk one day at the Dollar Store, that they had a 4 pack of tennis balls, and a 3 pack of brightly colored balls (same thing) in the dog section. Now if he was a color blind dog, which would you choose?
Remember....no free rides in life...'cept dogs!

i agree that bones are much better than plastic or rubber. however, raw bones contain many nutrients that are lost when cooked. cooked bones also splinter more easily.

i feed all raw food to my dogs....chicken, beef, pork, turkey, deer...bring it all on and leave the bones, it's all natural for them. heck, their crap doesn't even stink anymore! all those un-natural fillers and wheat and junk come right out the rear end and land in your yard.

if you want to read more, google BARF diet (bones and raw food)

Agreed, but she eats real dog food for that protein/nutrient thing, and the bone has raw meat on it still, and just don't want to take a chance. And the ONLY bone is a femur now. I should relate a story about bones and dogs. I stopped at the vet to let the pup go see all her friends (a real people lover) on the way back from town one day last year, and some woman was in there with a poor dog that had a small piece of bone wedged in between the teeth. Looked and probably was painful. Didn't puncture anything, just wedged in there. Always something!

Can't bone splinters from cooked bones be potentially life threatening? Don't know what the probablility of possible harm is, but do you want to take the chance?

Wonder what the relative risk is from harm due to splintering of cooked bones vs. raised bacterial risk but lowered splintering risk from raw bones.

Any vets here?

LL, Femurs don't splinter...but no chicken or rib and the like.....and fer crying out loud. Do ya think dogs in the wild, like coyotes, have some one go to WalMart for another bag of Alpo weekly? And while I would never give my dog a fragile bone, I wonder if a lot of this stuff is old wifes tales. And while I know nothing about this (never heard it before) on the cooked bone getting soft, I don't think an oven at couple hundred degrees has any effect. And I am beginning to think the P235/75/15 slathered in bacon grease is the ultimate answer!

Re: anything stronger then a kong for a dog chew

i didn't read that but from experience, dogs can handle the uncooked bones no problem...bacterial risk? maybe to me from all the raw meat in my kitchen. the dogs would rather the meat was a little more nasty than i can stomach. the only time i've seen them roll around in it was with some venison that spent a day or 2 too long in the ice chest, p u. they loved it.

Maybe you'll like this link better. A list of unedited, honest replies from wolf care managers regarding the question of whether or not consuming bones is safe for wolves. The wolf care managers have some different opinions; each dog owner can evaluate according to how they weigh the issues. One thing that was repeatedly noted is that in the wild canids eat the skin (including fur) and that the undigested fur seems to surround bone shards, thereby providing some protection as it all passes through the system on the way to elimination.

Not trying to talk anyone out of feeding their dogs bones, just supplying info from wold experts that might be relevent.

http://www.thepetcenter.com/imtop/wolfexrep.html
