My Brother has a Toyota pickup (1992 I think) with the 22re 5 speed manual trans.
He had his clutch replaced a few months back by a friend of his.
He has put a few thousand miles on the truck and now he says the truck shudders bad when he takes off from first gear. He said the clutch worked fine when the it was first replaced. He acts like its shaking the whole truck apart so it must be pretty bad.
He said he can dump the clutch and take off fast and it won't do it. It only does this when he takes off slow.
He said the clutch was a new kit from Napa.

Any ideas what the problem might be?
Thanks

Typically this problem is caused by pilot bearing/bushing failure. Could be the tranny is loose, Check all the bolts and make sure they're tight.

Reel Poor hit it right on the nose on this and another thing to consider is if he didn't have the fly wheel resurfaced it can and will cause engagement chatter.
The only cure is to pull it all out and replace it all.

Ayuh,.............

You Can't put a New Clutch against a Used Flywheel,........
The Flywheel Absolutely, Postively HAS to be Resurfaced............

He's Probably Chattered the New Clutch,+ Pressure Plate Into Junk by Now,........
He'll be better off Resurfaceing the Flywheel,+ Replacing the Clutch,+ Pressure Plate,........
Or,.....
He'll be doing it a 3rd Time............

What Bondo said. Long long ago, in a little garage in my backyard... I thought I'd save some time and money so I didn't change the pilot bushing or reface the flywheel... it looked fine. I ended up re-doing it because of the chatter... and yeah, it took a few hundred miles before it was bad enough to do something about. The clutch and pressure plate may still be ok... fix it asap and he may get lucky.

The fly wheel was resurfaced. It sounded like the guy that did the work knew what he was doing and decent parts were installed.

So I guess the problem is the pilot bearing.
I will let him know.
Thanks guys............

Dont forget to check the bolts to see if they're tight.

Another problem could have been oil contamination. If he reassembled everything with nasty greasy hands, the clutch disc could have been contaminated, which can cause chattering.

This could be the proof that he scammed him and just said that he resurfaced the flywheel and charged him for it. Its surely the #1 reason for chattering. Just a thought.

If it worked great for the first few thousand miles, I would say the work was done right. Yes, it could be those things, but a broken motor mount will cause the same symptom as well.

Dumping the clutch doing hole shots will tear up motor/tranny mounts real quick. Not saying this is the problem, but something worth looking at first before tearing it down.

An oil leak may be an issue. THe 22 Series engines were notorious for the U shaped plug at the back of the head (under the valve cover) leaking.
